“Who the C&MA is and who we become matters! Our faith and work—or the lack thereof—has direct impact upon souls, generations, people groups, churches, nations and even our understanding of God.”
John Stumbo has filled many roles with The Alliance over the past 30 years, including pastor, administrator, District Superintendent and most recently President of the U.S. C&MA. “My lifetime of ministry could be summarized by a simple statement: Loving Jesus by loving His church,” he wrote.
John first responded to the gospel as a seven-year-old boy in his father’s Minnesota church. During the LIFE ’76 conference in St. Louis, John’s life opened up to the work of the Holy Spirit. “I live with a lifetime of gratitude for God’s continued pursuit,” he wrote.
John received his BA in Bible and theology from Crown College and his MA in missiology from Columbia (S.C.) International University. He earned a DMin in Leadership and the Emerging Culture (2011) from George Fox Evangelical Seminary in 2011. A frequent contributor to alife and other magazines, John also has written two books, An Honest Look at a Mysterious Journey, and In The Midst.
In 2008, a lifetime of health was interrupted by a mysterious illness that robbed John of his muscle strength and the ability to swallow. His wife, Joanna, and their three adult children—Anna, Josiah and Andrew—were a source of help and comfort to John throughout his extended convalescence.
“I believe that vision is not something to be created. It is to be received. If called upon to serve as president, my prayer would be that God would grant me a listening heart to hear His heart for the future of our movement.” On June 13, 2013, and the C&MA General Council in Tampa, Florida, John was elected the 12th president of the U.S. C&MA.
