Patricia Groff

Indonesia, 1967

Patricia GroffPatricia Groff was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her family did not attend church, but when they moved to Brooklyn, New York, she and her brother started attending a Lutheran Sunday School. Later, while at a youth conference in Nyack, New York, Pat came in contact with The Alliance and, at age 12, committed her life to Jesus Christ. Throughout high school she focused her studies and activities toward attending Nyack College in preparation for overseas service.

While at Nyack, Pat distinguished herself as a campus leader, graduating with honors (magna cum laude) in 1963. After receiving her Masters Degree from State University College at Oneonta, New York, Pat spent a number of years teaching before going to Indonesia in 1967. She was assigned to the Bandung Missionary Children’s School where she taught for only sixty days before an intruder entered her apartment and murdered her on March 6, 1967. The motives for her death are unclear, but the culprit was apprehended.

During the short time Pat Groff served, her life greatly impacted her students and coworkers. She held the admiration of everyone she met. Her commitment, brief service and ultimate sacrifice were not in vain.

Pray.

The Alliance believes wholeheartedly in the power and necessity of prayer. We cannot “Live the Call Together” unless prayer is central to all we do—in our denomination, in our churches, and in our individual lives.

Give.

You can help build Christ’s Church around the world by donating online to the Great Commission Fund. This central funding vehicle allows our international workers to focus on ministry rather than raising financial support.

Serve.

Is God calling you to full-time service? Do you want to participate in a short-term missions trip and experience missions work firsthand? We’re here to help you connect your passion with God’s purpose.
