The Vietnam War, 1961-1975

U.S. involvement of the Vietnam War occurred in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia from 1959 to April 30, 1975. The war, which began as early as 1945, was fought between the communist North Vietnam, supported by its communist allies, and the government of South Vietnam, supported by the United States and other member nations of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO). American involvement ended on April 30, 1975, when the U.S. Marines evacuated the U.S. Embassy in Saigon of the last diplomatic, military, and civilian personnel by helicopter.
