Are You Ready to be Counted?

By

You may be among many who have asked this question: Why would the U.S. government spend $300 million to advertise a required event? I’m talking about the national census. Every 10 years, our constitution requires an “enumeration” to determine “the number of inhabitants.” The law requires an actual head count and imposes a fine for not responding or false reporting. In short, the decennial census requires the involvement of everyone living in the United States. In order to get accurate information, everybody must be counted. With a population in excess of 307 million people, it is necessary to beat the drum constantly to encourage participation. That’s the reason for advertising. The requirement of 100 percent participation isn’t unique to the U.S. census. God told the nation of Israel, “‘Take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one’” (Num. 1:2, emphasis added). With the exception of the Levites, God wanted 100 percent of His people to be counted.

There aren’t many national activities requiring that level of participation from the citizenry. And it may not even be possible to rally an entire nation to a common cause. The consequences of failure would have to be great enough to lure the nonparticipant out of complacency and into complete engagement. Is there a cause grand enough to demand 100 percent participation? I believe there is.

As citizens of a divine Kingdom, our King has given us a mandate worthy of our complete commitment: the Great Commission. “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age’” (Matt. 28:18–20).

Our Lord also spoke about our motive for completing His commission: “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come” (Matt. 24:14). It isn’t hard to sense the urgency of completing the Great Commission and bringing back the King, but one aspect is critical: 100 percent participation.

One Alliance core value proclaims, Completing the Great Commission will require the mobilization of every fully devoted disciple. This is bigger than The Alliance alone; it is a Kingdom value. At whatever place God has called you to serve—in the United States or overseas—you have a critical role in pushing back the darkness, completing the Great Commission and bringing back the King.

Just like our physical bodies, the Body of Christ has no unessential parts. As the Holy Spirit energizes and directs the whole Body (Eph. 1:22–23) to work as one to complete the Great Commission, every fully devoted disciple of Jesus must be mobilized to maximize our effectiveness. Are you ready to be counted?
