Board Summary Letter
Dear Co-Laborer for Christ,
On October 26–27, 2016, the Board of Directors of The Christian and Missionary Alliance experienced God’s wonderful creation on the shores of Lake Erie where they were hosted by Camp Director and Board member Ralph Trainer at the historic and beautifully appointed Beulah Beach Camp and Retreat Center. The meeting took place on the very spot where A. B. Simpson, A. W. Tozer, and other Alliance leaders have spoken over the years. The old open-aired meeting hall has recently been replaced by a state-of-the-art conference facility that greatly enhanced the Board’s interactions.
The highlight of our meeting took place when the entire Board visited several ministries in the Cleveland area, including two Central District church plants, a partnership with a refugee center, and Envision Cleveland. Those tours concluded with a livestreamed evening prayer and praise service at Grace Church. Since the service was in Cleveland during a World Series game, it was a joy to have a full sanctuary.
During our business sessions, the following issues were discussed, and action was taken by the Board of Directors:
Presidential Transition at Shell Point
After many years of faithful leadership as president of Shell Point Retirement Community, Peter Dys introduced Martin C. Schappell as his successor. The Board approved Mr. Schappell as the new president for Shell Point beginning November 1, 2016. Mr. Schappell is local to the Fort Myers area and has served for eight years on the Shell Point board.
President of Alliance Development Fund
Lawrence L. McCooey was approved for another three-year term as president of The Alliance Development Fund through March 30, 2020.
Life Impact Ministries Concluding/Restructured
The auxiliary ministry known as Life Impact Ministries has been dissolved and replaced with the LIFE Office. The shift includes a change in leadership, with Mr. Scott R. Wakeley assuming full responsibility for the triennial LIFE event (the largest event sponsored by The Alliance with more than 5,000 youth in attendance).
C&MA Manual Changes
Several revisions were approved and will be made soon in the C&MA Manual located on the Web site. Among the revisions were the closure of the Lao Association and the change of name and reorganization of the Association of African-American Churches to become African-American Pastors’ Association.
International Worker Appointments
Thirteen international worker appointments were approved for service with The Alliance, bringing our total for the year to 29. The Board rejoices with the new workers that God has called and for the faithful prayers and financial contributions of the Alliance family that will allow them to be sent.
2017 Health Plan
The Board reviewed the 2017 health plan proposed by the vice president for Operations/treasurer. The plan will continue to provide quality and relative affordable health-care coverage through the Alliance Health Plan in 2017. The National Office is currently seeking to hire a new director for Alliance Benefits who will focus on growing the plan.
The Higher Education Review Committee received annual reports from the four higher education institutions (Crown College, Nyack College, Simpson University, and Toccoa Falls College). The Board rejoiced with the successes and made action plans for several areas of concern, which will be closely monitored going forward. Please keep our schools in prayer as they face extreme challenges in the current cultural and political environment.
The Board Meeting closed with a time to reflect on the Board’s opportunity to engage with the Alliance family who are seeing much fruit in their faithful service to the Cleveland community. The Board then spent time in prayer for God’s increasing work in every area where the Alliance family has opportunity to share the hope-filled message of Jesus Christ.
Thank you for praying for the Board. This is a good time to be part of our Christ-centered, Acts 1:8 family.
In Christ’s love,
Steven C. Lausell
