Board Summary Letter

By

Dear Co-Laborer for Christ,

On October 25–26, the Board of Directors of The Christian and Missionary Alliance was hosted at the Town and Country Manor in beautiful Santa Ana by Dirk E. DeWolfe and his team. Our meeting was held at the adjacent Celebration Church pastored by Rev. Gary E. Tangeman.

The Board toured the retirement community facilities and met many of its residents. We also were inspired by our visit to Watts Powerhouse Church, an Envision site, led by Dr. Todd W. and Mrs. Jennifer Grant, and to Lyn Gate Neighborhood Church in Lynwood, where Mr. Moises Valentin began our first Alliance immigration assistance service (New-Voice) in partnership with the South Pacific District. This service will also be provided at Northgate Church in Cathedral City and Celebration Church in Santa Ana.

During our business sessions, the following were highlights of the issues discussed and actions taken by the Board of Directors:

After much prayer and thoughtful deliberation, Rev. Terry D. Smith was nominated by President John Stumbo and approved by the Board as vice president for Church Ministries. Terry has served in many leadership capacities in the C&MA, including his position as superintendent of the Eastern Pennsylvania District. Vice President Smith transitioned to his new role December 1, 2017.

The Higher Education Review Committee received annual reports from the four higher education institutions (Crown College, Nyack College, Simpson University, and Toccoa Falls College). The Board rejoiced with the successes experienced by each school. In diverse ways our educational institutions continue to face cultural, financial, and political challenges that we will continue to closely monitor.

The Board celebrated the hiring of Curtis L. Farmer as the new director for Alliance Benefits.

Eight international workers were presented and joyfully appointed by the Board to serve in four different regions.

Several C&MA Manual changes were approved and have been updated on the Alliance Web site. The changes included a clarification of constituted and developing districts and an update of our current church associations. Several changes were also made to the IM Handbook, including a description of maternity and paternity leave.

The Board meeting closed with a meaningful time of reflection and prayer. Board members expressed gratefulness for the rich diversity of effective ministry in Southern California and God’s faithful and sovereign guidance as we continue to grow as a Christ-centered, Acts 1:8 family.

In Christ’s love,

Steven C. Lausell

Corporate Secretary
