C&MA DNA Core Values

By

The Fourfold Gospel—the heart of what Alliance people believe about Jesus Christ—forms the foundation of everything that makes us distinctive. Out of our Christology comes our commitment to sharing the mission of Jesus, and that mission dictates the values that we hold and the behaviors by which we live them out. The seven “core values” of The Christian and Missionary Alliance are, in the end, simply the values of Jesus Christ. If we want to become more like Him, it will only happen as His values become our own.

Lost people matter to God. He wants them found. If you know anything at all about the life of Jesus Christ, you know that He is the personification of that statement. He came “to seek and to save what was lost” (Luke 19:10)—and everything He said and did underscored that fact. If we are going to be like Jesus, we must become a people “on mission” with Him!

Prayer is the primary work of God’s people. Have you ever noticed how much time and energy Jesus spent communicating with His Father in heaven? Jesus was “all about” prayer—and every person who has made a big impact for God has also become “addicted” to the practice of prayer. When we learn how to pray the way Jesus taught His disciples to pray, then we will change the world—just as they did!

Everything we have belongs to God. We are His stewards. Jesus modeled that one, too. He didn’t just tell us how to live; He showed us! And if we learn what A. W. Tozer has called “the blessedness of possessing nothing,” we will experience a freedom most of us have never known.

Knowing and obeying God’s Word is fundamental to all true success. When challenged by the devil, Jesus “defeated” His tempter with Scripture: “‘Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord’” (Deut. 8:3). And to His disciples He said, “My food . . . is to do the will of him who sent me” (John 4:34). To us—those who come in the train of those same disciples—He says, “If you know my commands, you will be happy if you do them.” This core value was the secret of Jesus’ success, and it is the promise of our happiness and success as well!

Completing the Great Commission will require the mobilization of every fully devoted disciple. Why do you think that instead of spending every moment and every ounce of energy doing miracles, healing the sick and preaching to the crowds, Jesus devoted so much of His life to training His disciples? It was because the goal was so big, so astonishing and so far reaching that, in His infinite wisdom, God determined to involve all of His people in its accomplishment. It falls to us to take the good news of God’s redeeming love to every man, woman and child. How can we do it? By working together and using all the gifts and resources that God has given us.

Without the empowerment of the Holy Spirit we can accomplish nothing. Even a casual reading of the Gospels reveals that Jesus relied heavily upon the Holy Spirit for His life and ministry. That is one of the main points made by the accounts of His baptism. And when He breathed on the disciples and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit,” telling them to wait in Jerusalem until the Spirit had come upon them, He made it clear that we can only expect to accomplish His work in exactly the same way. So the question becomes very important to each one of us: Have you received the power from on high? Are you living in the fullness of the Holy Spirit?

Achieving God’s purposes means taking faithfilled risks. This always involves change. The Lord Jesus was the world’s greatest taker of faith-filled risks. He went to the cross believing that God would raise Him from the dead! Faith is all about believing God when everything else says “this is impossible.” We are resistant to change, but God never called anyone to go anywhere to leave things the way they were. He is always prodding us toward change—to get up and move forward to the Promised Land! If we are the people who are going to “bring back the King,” we’re going to have to take some faith-filled risks!

I hope that you are convinced. These are not so much the values of the C&MA as they are the values of Jesus. Whenever and wherever the people of The Alliance actually live out the behaviors associated with these values, we become an extraordinary, world-changing movement! Are you ready to change the world?
