Modeling the Heart of God

The Alliance has historically been a generous movement.

Most of us have heard that the Bible has more to say about money and possessions than any other single topic—more than heaven or hell, prayer or even salvation. Throughout Scripture we are reminded that giving is central in the heart of God. God Himself is the best example: “God so loved the world that he gave…” (John 3:16).

King David made a great contribution to the building of the temple in Jerusalem. In today’s economy the value of the gold, silver and precious jewels he gave would possibly exceed a billion dollars. Yet David’s humility and his understanding of ownership shined through when he prayed, “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand” (1 Chron. 29:14).

Members of the Early Church were very generous with one another. The gospel spread quickly throughout the known world because people saw how the young church took care of its own: “They gave to anyone as he had need” (Acts 2:45). Paul took up an offering among the churches he ministered to for the struggling saints in Jerusalem. Barnabas is a tremendous example for us (Acts 4). His gift of property demonstrated that he truly understood the heart of generosity; he went beyond tithing his income to give an asset in order to meet a need.

This heart of generosity has been at the core of The Chris-tian and Missionary Alliance since its inception. The summer Bible conferences organized by Dr. A. B. Simpson in Old Orchard, Maine, were characterized by a remarkable moving of the Holy Spirit. Simpson wrote: “It was God’s work, and God’s alone. By one mighty sweep of the Holy Ghost, God led a humble Convention of plain people, few of whom were rich, to pledge, in a single hour, nearly $30,000 for the evangelization of the world.”

The Alliance has historically been a generous movement, funding many of the world’s great evangelistic ministries. In order to meet the needs of its people, The Alliance began to offer finan-cial-planning services to help fulfill the Great Commission. Begun as Stewardship Ministries in 1967 and incorporated as The Orchard Foundation in 1998, this ministry has assisted countless individuals with their gift planning and estate-design needs and generated cash and appreciated property gifts in excess of $636 million for Kingdom-advancing ministries.

Committed to meeting the unique goals and needs of the individual, The Orchard Foundation has a simple, underlying theological viewpoint: God is the Owner of everything (Exod. 19:5). He calls us to be stewards of that which He has entrusted to us during our brief stay on this earth. It is important, therefore, that we carefully plan the current and future use of our resources—to meet our personal, family and Kingdom-advancing objectives.

To this end, representatives of The Orchard Foundation help individuals with their unique philanthropic desires. The services provided by The Orchard Foundation include personal financial goal setting; family intergenerational business planning; the processing of gifts such as cash, stock and real estate; charitable gift annuities; giving through IRAs; estate settlement; and help with the drafting of a Christian will.

Dr. Simpson once said, “The highest priority of the church is the fulfillment of the Great Commission.” And he clearly understood that to accomplish this would require an abundance of resources. As in Simpson’s day, God has entrusted today’s Christians with more than enough resources to fulfill His plan. Together, as we wisely manage God’s resources, we will have more than enough to fund the ministries of The Alliance. Ultimately, we will see lives transformed to His glory.
