Sunday School is for Everyone

By

Attending Sunday school was foundational in my life as I was growing up. For my parents, Sunday school was not an option. We went as a family, and we went faithfully. It was in this setting that I learned Bible stories and memorized verses that have stayed with me all of my life. It was in Sunday school that I developed Christian disciplines that I took to college. The discipline of Sunday school put meat on the bones of 2 Timothy 2:15: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”

Our society has developed a double standard for many things based on age. It uses such words as “adult” or “for mature audiences” to justify behaviors or entertainment that are unhealthy for any age. Some Christians have used this same logic to excuse themselves from Sunday school, rationalizing that it is for kids and not necessarily for them.

I encourage you to make Sunday school part of your life—not because you have to but because you get to. Be an example to the children and teens. None of us have arrived where God desires us to be spiritually. Sunday school is an opportunity to learn, to share and to encourage.
