The medical needs experienced by women and children in Mali are absolutely staggering, easily among the worst in the entire world. A hospital facility dedicated to women and children, even were it only equipped to 1990’s medical standards, would make a large reduction in local maternal and infant mortality. The Koutiala Hospital for Women and Children, located just outside the city of Koutiala, opened in May 2006 providing full maternity services. There are currently two main patient care buildings, with plans for a third large maternity building to be built as volume and finances dictate.
