Location:

Madrid, Spain

Job Title:

International Worker/Church Planter/Seminary Professor

Term of Service:

4 years

Description:

This is a unique opportunity for the individual or couple who are gifted teachers/mentors. In response to a clear need to train future pastors and a growing number of students with a clear call to vocational ministry, the C&MA National Church of Spain is initiating a brand new seminary (INFORMA*). The seminary is co-sponsored by FATELA and is being brought about in coordination with the C&MA-led field and international worker team. Classes begin in January of 2012.

During the initial stages of this project, some professors will travel to Spain from North and South America to teach intensive courses, while additional professors will be recruited locally. There is a need for another couple who could live in Spain and assist with this ministry, teaching in the seminary from the platform of a “practitioner” actively involved in local church ministry. Ideally, a couple would serve in this role, but at least one person should have strong teaching gifts. They would also be actively involved in ministry in a local Alliance church or church plant in the greater Madrid area. They would need to be willing to travel periodically to Barcelona to teach intensive courses there as well.

Important Clarification: Applicants need to be aware that serving in the missions world typically requires a higher-than-normal degree of grace and flexibility on the part of those applying. Overseas positions can be a bit of a moving target. By this it is meant that our overseas teams can be suddenly and unexpectedly impacted by illness, governmental decisions, financial realities, team change, or other factors beyond our control. The challenge for applicants is that these factors can sometimes necessitate the sudden redefining of a position. This redefining can happen before, during, or even after the application/interview process.

Ministry Responsibilities:

Teach at least two or three theology or ministry courses per year in INFORMA.

Attend and be actively involved in ministry in a local Alliance church, preferably in a church planting context.

Assist in other teaching/training roles in local Alliance churches when possible (secondary ministry).

Mentor students, national pastors and potential future pastors as opportunities present themselves.

Work at developing relationships and connecting with un-churched Spanish neighbors and contacts, seeking to share Christ on a regular basis.

Assist the rector of INFORMA as possible in organizational and administrative tasks as INFORMA develops, especially in the initial stages of this project (potential ministry).

Make a healthy and positive adjustment to local culture.

Minimum Qualifications:

Speak Spanish already, with above average to excellent proficiency in the language.

Fluent in English and Spanish.

Strong teaching gifts, as confirmed through prior teaching experience.

Gifting and experience in evangelism and church planting.

Prior experience in teaching on a seminary level in Spanish.

Passion for teaching, mentoring and leadership development.

Theological or Ministry Master’s degree or higher, due to accreditation requirements of FATELA.

Philosophically and practically in alignment with C&MA core values, church planting focus and methodology.

Excellent relational skills.

Must have served effectively in strategic local church ministry on a voluntary basis for a minimum of two years.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous ministry experience in Latin America

Pastoral and church planting experience

Evangelism and discipleship experience

Gifts in administration and organization would be a plus

Ordination:

Ordination is preferred but not required.

Timeline:

Planned arrival on field for this role is summer/fall 2012.

Work/Living Environment:

The successful applicant would live in one of the largest cities in Europe. Madrid is an eclectic mixture of modern and historic, with wonderful museums, parks and architecture.

Language Expectations:

Speak Spanish already, with above average to excellent proficiency in the language.

Fluent in English and Spanish.

Expectations for Spouse:

For a couple, if the spouse has teaching or administrative gifts, there would be ample opportunity to be involved in INFORMA. If not, opportunities for relational evangelism and discipleship, as well as small group ministries, women’s ministries, etc. abound. The spouse would be expected to be active in ministry.

Children’s Educational Plan/Options:

The Madrid area offers a large range of options for MK education once the children learn Spanish, with several bi-lingual options also available. Some private English schools are also available but they are mostly either expensive or inconveniently located. A Christian MK school is also available on the outskirts of Madrid and has been used by many of our families. Many of these schools are quite good, and our MKs usually receive a quality education.

Available Housing:

Housing will be a rented house or apartment. Electricity is 220v/50hz so many U.S. appliances will not work properly here unless designed to be dual voltage.

Health Considerations:

Madrid has modern, good health care facilities, well trained doctors, and most medications are readily available.

Geographic Information:

Madrid is a very modern city, with a rich culture and fascinating history. For more information visit this Web site today.

Status of Christian Witness:

The post-modern, secular environment of Europe is very much descriptive of Spain as well. Barely 1% of the population is considered evangelical Christian. Yet the past 10 years have seen remarkable growth, due largely to the influence of immigration, especially from Latin America. More information is available at our field Web site today.

General Information:

The C&MA family of some 20 local churches in Spain has seen strong growth in recent years, largely through the impact of immigration on the country, and also through the influence of dedicated pastors and workers who have immigrated from our related sister churches in Latin America. Even more remarkable is the growing number of young men and women who sense a call to vocational ministry. This is precisely why INFORMA is being established, to help train the next generation of pastors and leaders for The Alliance (and other) evangelical churches in Spain. This present Ministry Opportunity Description thus represents a truly strategic role in the training and mentoring of servant leaders who can impact an entire nation for Christ.

Ministry Team Make-up:

The Spain field of the C&MA is a very diverse team made up of 24 international workers from the United States, Canada, Holland, Lebanon and Colombia. Our national pastors represent an even more diverse group, with 11 different nationalities included.

Compensation Package:

The sacrificial giving of Alliance people to the Great Commission Fund allows us to designate this role as fully funded. Philosophically we believe strongly in a centrally-funded financial process which frees our workers to focus on ministry rather than fund raising. For details on how Alliance compensation works our worker compensation page. Our workers do privately raise some funds for vehicle purchase and ministry funds. The generous giving of Alliance churches and individuals all across the U.S. allows us to cover all costs related to a monthly living allowance, housing, travel, children’s education, and full benefits.

*INFORMA stands for the Alliance Ministerial Training Institute in Spanish.

Interested parties should also write to ministryopps@cmalliance.org to request a copy of our International Ministries Handbook (IMH). The personnel section of the IMH should be read carefully by anyone with serious interest in serving with us.

Location:

Bongolo Hospital, Gabon, Africa

Position Type

Fulltime Self-Funded Nurse and Nursing Instructor

Description:

Bongolo Hospital is a 160-bed teaching and referral hospital for the country of Gabon, with training programs in nursing, general surgery, ophthalmology, midwifery, and HIV/AIDS. It has also become a powerful voice for the gospel of Jesus Christ and for championing compassionate healthcare for the poor. Each year more than a thousand patients at the hospital pray to receive Christ. We estimate that a third of these patients end up in Alliance and other evangelical churches in Gabon. The missionary medical team’s weekend church-planting ministries and involvement in child evangelism are opportunities for medical professionals to participate in broader Kingdom ministries.

The foundation for much of the hospital’s growth and evangelism over the past three decades has been the Bongolo Nursing School. As the hospital has increased its services and provided compassionate healthcare to more and more people, the need for skilled and spiritually mature nurses who share the Church’s vision for medical ministry has become critical to staying on mission. Unfortunately, three of the four nurses currently teaching in Bongolo’s nursing school will be leaving or retiring within the next three years. One new missionary nurse was appointed in 2011 and will be completing language study in the spring of 2012, but additional nurses will be needed to expand the school to two classes and prepare more nationals to participate as faculty.

Important Clarification: Applicants need to be aware that serving internationally requires a higher-than-normal degree of grace and flexibility. Overseas positions can be a moving target, since illness, governmental decisions, financial realities, team change, or other factors beyond our control can suddenly and unexpectedly change the playing field. These factors can sometimes redefine the position and require considerable flexibility on the part of the worker. This can happen before, during, or even after the application/interview process.

Ministry Responsibilities:

Serve fulltime as a Nursing Instructor at Bongolo Hospital.

Make a healthy and positive adjustment to local culture.

Effectively perform any of the duties related to your professional ministry platform.

Where applicable, perform needed community, ministry center program duties, and other appropriate and relevant duties as assigned by the Team Leader.

Raise all necessary funding from churches and individuals to pay for all travel, living expenses, health insurance, educational fees and related expenses for children (if applicable), professional fees, the cost of attending Field Forum, and other ministry related expenses.

Raise all necessary funding to pay for six to nine months of formal French language studies in France or Switzerland.

Communicate with supporting churches and individuals regularly and effectively.

Accept the authority of the hospital in matters relating to staffing, work hours, chain of command, issues with hospital employees, and other matters related to the hospital administration.

Attend annual Field Forums and prayer retreats and help to organize them when asked.

Minimum Qualifications:

A clear and compelling call to cross-cultural missionary service, with indication of passion

A nursing degree from a recognized school in North America, and a nursing license

Completion of an approved cross-cultural course

Although formal theological training in a C&MA school is not required, must have a working knowledge of the Bible and how it applies to life and ministry

Either proven ability to teach, both in class and on the wards or a willingness to learn to teach

Spiritual maturity and the ability to disciple new believers

A willingness to learn French

If married, a spouse who feels equally called to serve in Bongolo, according to his/her capacities and gifts

Other Qualifications:

Experience in personal evangelism

Discipleship experience in a local church

Positive and healthy family dynamics

Strong communication and verbal skills

A positive team player with exceptional team player and relational skills

A love of teaching

The ability to live and work as part of a closely-knit team

The ability to plan, prioritize and complete ministry tasks

Personal strengths in patience, flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to keep learning

The ability to handle transition and change well

A willingness to lead if called upon

Successful completion of a process involving a positive review of 5 references, completion of application materials, and a multi-leveled interview process that would involve full mental and physical health assessment and background checks.

Timeline:

French language studies beginning in September 2013, arrival in Gabon by mid-July 2014.

Language Expectations:

Fluency in French

Expectations for Spouse:

Spouse’s ministry would be conditional on his/her area of training and giftedness, and local opportunities to serve.

Children’s Educational Options:

Home schooling for elementary levels, with help from a missionary teacher and other homeschoolers on the housing campus. Other options include Rain Forest Academy, in Yaounde, Cameroon (middle school or high school).

Available Housing:

A partially-furnished apartment on the Bongolo housing campus, or if necessary, a rental in town.

Health Considerations:

Must be able to take malaria prophylaxis, have valid vaccinations for Yellow Fever, Typhoid (oral), Hepatitis A and B.

Geographic Information:

Central African rain forest, 8-9 hours by road from Libreville and 90 minutes by small plane. Lébamba is a rural community of about 15,000, made up of subsistence farmers, merchants, government employees, logging companies, and hospital employees. One third of the hospital’s patients come from Libreville.

Status of Christian Witness:

No restrictions.

General Information:

Bongolo Hospital’s nursing school has a 29-month training program and accepts Christian students who have completed 10th grade or higher. The school curriculum includes traditional nursing subjects, as well as physical diagnosis and basic treatment, and biblical courses, training on the wards, and mentoring. Since 1977 the school has graduated more than 210 nurses. Approximately 15 have subsequently been trained to be midwives, lab techs, dentists, cataract surgeons, nurse-anesthetists, surgical technicians, nurse consultants, HIV/AIDS nurses, and ophthalmic nurses. Three grads are currently serving as medical missionaries in Guinea and the Republic of Congo. Other training programs at the hospital include a five-year, post-doctoral residency program in general surgery under the Pan-African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS), and a three-year residency in ophthalmology for MDs. The Hospital is actively seeking official approval from the Ministry of Higher Education for all of its training programs. Recent progress in this effort is a cause for optimism.

Ministry Team Make-up:

The current IM Bongolo medical team includes six doctors (three surgeons, a pediatrician, an Internist/pediatrician, and an ophthalmologist), four nurse-instructors, one maintenance chief and a bookkeeper. African residents currently number seven, not counting their families. The Africans on the medical team include three doctors, four hospital administrators, and two chaplains. Every year the hospital is served by between 15 and 20 short-term medical volunteers, most of who come for periods of 10 to 14 days.

Compensation Package:

This is a self-funded role. Funds must be raised through the applicant’s network of friends and family, local church, or other resources. Cost information will be made available upon application.

Timeline:

Planned arrival on field for this role is summer 2013.

Work and Living Environment:

The worker(s) will do language study in the city of Gjilan, one of the 7 major cities of Kosovo. Gjilan has a population of roughly 100,000 people; seventy percent of them are under age 35. All utilities, including internet, are available in Gjilan. There are also several large grocery stores where most everyday items can be purchased. In Gjilan you will be working closely with the Resurrection Center team throughout the time of language study. After language study you will likely be assigned to another city or village for church planting.

Language Expectations:

The goal at the end of two years of full-time language study is to reach a proficiency level of 2.5 (Advanced High) based on the ACTFL guidelines.

Expectations for Spouse:

Husbands and wives have an equal opportunity to reach families with the gospel. While individuals vary in their ministries, we expect both spouses to maintain ministry involvement. We do realize the challenges of raising and educating children, yet anticipate that for couples with small and school-aged children in the home, both spouses will still be involved in some ministry.

Children’s Educational Plan Options:

Educational options in Kosovo consist of: (1) Local Albanian language schools, (2) International schools in the Capital and, (3) Home schooling. International schools are likely not an option for personnel living outside the Capital.

Available Housing:

Workers in Kosovo usually rent modest, fully-furnished apartments or houses. All will have full 220V electrical service and some type of heating (electric, wood, or central heating). Internet is widely available in most larger communities in Kosovo either through cable TV providers or through the phone company. Electricity in Kosovo is regular but with regular rationing or outages.

Health Considerations:

Kosovo has basic health care services available as well as several well-run private clinics, dentists, etc. Higher-quality medical care is available nearby in Macedonia and Greece.

Geographic Information:

Kosovo is landlocked, bordered by Albania on the west, Macedonia on the south and Serbia on the east and north. It is 4,212 square miles in size or roughly the size of Connecticut. Kosovo is home to a large Albanian majority (90 percent) with Serbian, Roma, Turkish, Bosnian, and Goran minorities. The climate is similar to the north-central U.S. (Indiana, Ohio, or Pennsylvania) with cold winters and hot summers.

Status of Christian Witness:

Kosovo is 0.1 percent evangelical with a small but growing national church movement. All ethnic groups are among the least reached people in the world. They hold to their traditions quite firmly but are religiously fairly secular. They are very open to discussing issues of faith.

General Information:

Albanian culture is very hospitable and growing numbers of people, especially youth, speak English. North Americans are also regarded quite highly for historical reasons. Shopping in Kosovo is adequate and transportation is usually by taxi, bus, or vehicle.

Team Make-up:

Currently all C&MA personnel are working in the Resurrection Center/Church in the city of Gjilan. The team is made up of a varying number of workers on 1-2 year assignments. In the near future the team foresees redeploying workers back to the Capital (Prishtina) as well as other cities which are targets for church planting.

Compensation Package:

The sacrificial giving of Alliance people to the Great Commission Fund allows us to designate this role as fully funded. The generous giving of Alliance churches and individuals all across the U.S. allows us to cover all costs related to a monthly living allowance, housing, travel, children’s education, and full benefits. For details on how Alliance compensation works see our worker compensation page. Our international workers are expected to be involved in raising funds for the Great Commission Fund and also to privately raise some funds for vehicle purchase and ministry funds.

Interested parties should also write to ministryopps@cmalliance.org to request a copy of our International Ministries Handbook (IMH). The personnel section of the IMH should be read carefully by anyone with serious interest in serving with us.

International Worker

Description:

This is an unusual opportunity for a highly motivated, out-of-the-box individual or couple, who have a strong calling, to be vitally involved in a brand new initiative to one of the most needy and challenging countries in the world. This country has more unengaged and under-engaged people groups than any other single nation. It will be a tough place to serve and demand a high level of tenacity. Workers will be members of a team dedicated to a culturally sensitive approach to pioneer church planting, using some form of a “business as mission” strategy. Each team member will be expected to make a strong contribution in the areas of relational outreach, discipleship, and leadership development, as core methodologies in this effort.

Important Clarification: Applicants should be aware that serving in the international world typically requires a higher-than-normal degree of grace and flexibility. Overseas cross-cultural positions can be a bit of a moving target. For example, overseas teams can be suddenly and unexpectedly impacted by illness, government decisions, financial realities, team changes, or other factors beyond the team’s control. The challenge for applicants is that these factors can sometimes necessitate the sudden redefining of a position. This redefining can take place before, during, or even after the application/interview process has begun or is completed.

Responsibilities:

Learn the local language to a high level of proficiency. Funding will be provided for the new worker to complete this important task in an appropriate location that allows for significant local language immersion. Normally the language program will be completed in approximately two years.

Adjust to the culture in healthy and positive ways.

Make new contacts, share the gospel, and develop relationships on a weekly basis.

Be prepared to travel, when invited by new contacts, for the purpose of relationship building and evangelism.

Initiate Bible studies or discipleship activities with new contacts.

Have an open home regularly for entertaining new contacts and team events.

Attend, lead, or contribute to a weekly Bible study, discussion, or other types of meetings and events designed as outreach, discipleship, or worship meetings as a part of the church planting effort.

Maintain an in-depth knowledge of the team’s business plan including: mission, goals, core values, structure, administration, market strategies, financial issues, processes, personnel, implantation, design, and evaluation.

Participate in business planning, strategy sessions, and in actual implementation, as agreed on in consultation with the team leader.

Strengthen personal knowledge of general business principles, best practices, and local business issues.

Carry out any work duties related to a professional ministry platform.

Regularly communicate effectively and securely with the local team leader, IM, and supporting churches and individuals in the U.S.

Perform any other duties as assigned by the Team Leader.

Minimum Qualifications:

Academic Qualifications:

A recognized bachelor’s degree. (both husband and wife if married)

In the case of married couples, the husband will have completed a minimum of 30 hours of Bible/Theology/Ministry, 15 hours of Intercultural Studies (ICS). The wife a minimum of 18 hours of Bible/Theology, 15 hours of missions/ministry studies. Of the 15 hours of missions/ministry studies at least 6 hours must be in cross-cultural or missions fields.

Single workers will meet the same academic qualifications as “husbands” above.

Ministry Qualifications: Two years of licensed Alliance ministry experience.

Alliance ordination completed.

Successful completion of a hiring/appointment process involving a positive review of five references, completion of application materials, and a multi-leveled interview process that would involve full mental and physical health assessment and background checks.

Please see the International Ministries Handbook for further qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications:

A minimum of one year of graduate or seminary training in missions and cross-cultural studies from Alliance Theological Seminary or an IM-approved alternative degree program.

Previous ministry experience in an urbanized and cross-cultural context.

Some business training and business experience preferred.

Timeline:

Planned arrival on field for this role is summer 2013.

Work and Living Environment:

Workers will live in a dynamic urban environment which is likely to be congested, hot, noisy, and lively, all at the same time. Housing will probably be a rented apartment or townhouse like facility. Because incarnational ministry is viewed as highly strategic, team members will live in, or very near, the areas targeted for ministry.

Language Expectations:

Learn the local language to a high level of proficiency. Funding will be provided for the new worker to complete this important task in an appropriate location that allows for significant local language immersion. Normally the language program will be completed in approximately two years.

Expectations for Spouse:

Spouses are considered equal team members. Consideration will be given to an appropriately reduced team involvement because of children’s needs.

Children’s Educational Plan and Options:

Educational options include: home schooling, possible co-op schooling, and local international schools. Boarding school is not an option before the child reaches high school age. Local regular schools may not be considered adequate.

Available Housing:

Rented facilities as noted above. This country has 220v but it may not be constant and there could be periodic or regular power outages.

Health Considerations:

Local hospitals may not be considered adequate for some health issues. Much better medical care is available in the major cities of this country and regional hubs, such as Singapore and Bangkok.

Geographic Information:

The team will be located in a large fairly sprawling urban center with approximately five million people. Extremes of poverty, riches, class distinction, heat, noise, filth, cleanliness, modern facilities and outdated infrastructure all exist within the city limits. The target areas are in the northern region, which is known as the most populated and crowded part of the country.

Status of Christian Witness:

These areas are critically under-engaged with the gospel. The people are difficult to reach and yet God is opening many hearts. Currently the overall number of Christians in the area is under 1% of the total population.

General Information:

Life and ministry in this country will not be easy for the reasons cited above, but it is highly strategic for advancing the Great Commission. Workers should be prepared for the long haul. It will be through friendships and networks of relationships that the gospel is most effectively shared, and making many friends is very possible.

Team Make-up:

Teammates will be highly-motivated, talented, and well-trained individuals committed to the task of being effective culturally sensitive witnesses in a very challenging environment. While this describes all members of the team, some will come with strong business training and business experience and therefore focus more on the business dimensions of the ministry. Others will come with traditional ministry training and church leadership experience and thus will focus more on the ministry aspects of this effort. This is not to say that these two basic types of worker or work are mutually exclusive. On the contrary, it is rather to point out different, and yet highly complementary, backgrounds and experiences which will blend to form an effective kingdom advancing team, pulling together, in diverse ways, for the same objectives.

*CAC (Creative Access Country) Specific location information related to this ministry description will only be released in later stages of application process.

Ministry Responsibilities:

Learn the Thai language to a sixth grade proficiency after one year and be fluent after two years. The first year of language learning will combine interactive language classes and individual tutoring as well as being exposed to and immersed in the Thai culture. The second year will include continuation of individual tutoring and emphasize opportunities to use the language in different settings as well as grow in proficiency.

Reach out and share the Gospel through your network of relationships.

Engage local people and express the love of Christ according to felt needs.

Develop relationships with Thai Christians that facilitate a cooperative outreach to the community.

Preferred Qualifications:

A minimum of one year of graduate or seminary training in missions and cross-cultural studies from Alliance Theological Seminary or an IM-approved alternative degree program.

Alliance ordination completed.

Timeline:

Planned arrival on field for this role is summer 2013.

Work and Living Environment:

The successful applicant would live in the Bangkok metropolitan area, which is the capital and principal city of Thailand. The Thai people are friendly and gracious, but they are still darkened by the appeasement of evil spirits, Buddhism, and Islam. You will live in the local community of the new church plant where you will seek to introduce others to the light of Jesus, mentor them in Biblical faithfulness, and partner with Thai churches to plant new communities of faith.

Language Expectations:

You will receive two years of intensive Thai language and cultural study. Your goal will be to speak, read, and write Thai at a fluent level, so that you can clearly share the good news of Jesus. The mastery of the Thai language is really a life-long learning process.

Expectations for Spouse:

The wife will be expected to complete the two-year language program for new international workers. Child care is provided for pre-school children during language study. The wife will then be expected to participate in the church planting ministry with consideration and flexibility to the needs of the family and children.

Children’s Educational Plan and Options:

There are many international schools in the Bangkok metropolitan area, especially in the area east of the Chao Praya River. Homeschooling is a possibility for elementary and middle school age children. Boarding school options are available at Grace Academy in Chiang Mai and Dalat International School in Penang, Malaysia for middle and high school students.

Available Housing:

Housing will be in a rented house, townhouse or apartment. Electricity is 220 V/50Hz and is reliable. Tap water is relatively clean but must be filtered before consumed. High speed internet and cable television is readily available.

Health Considerations:

Modern and inexpensive medical care is available in the Bangkok area. Medications can easily be obtained through hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies.

Geographic Information:

Bangkok is a rapidly-developing city with many modern facilities. Bangkok has a hot, humid climate so summer styles of clothing are worn throughout the year with just a light jacket sometimes needed in cool season. Thai food is mainly meat and vegetable stir fry dishes and curries often with a spicy flavor eaten over rice. Thai people greet one another with a wai, where both hands are pressed together above the chest with a slight bow. The Thai people are friendly, gracious and respectful and in need of Jesus.

Status of Christian Witness:

The Bangkok area is only about 0.5% Christian or only one in 200 people knows Jesus. Thailand has freedom of religion. International workers face no restrictions on their efforts to share the light of Jesus with others. Thai people often think that all religions are good because all religions teach us to be good people. But they desperately need to know the Savior who is the only One who can free them from their sinful ways and Satan’s deception.

General Information:

There is much growth and development throughout the Bangkok area as this is the economic center of the country. Transportation is rather convenient with an expanding sky train and subway train system, numerous public bus routes and many taxis. Cars are driven on the left side of the road like the British. Numerous opportunities for shopping are available in shopping malls and markets. Western products and foods are quite available.

Team Make-up:

International workers will work in partnership with Thai Christian colleagues to start new communities of faith.

Regularly communicate effectively and securely with supporting churches and individuals.

Any other duties as assigned by the Team Leader.

Preferred Qualifications:

A minimum of one year of graduate or seminary training in missions and cross-cultural studies from Alliance Theological Seminary or an IM-approved alternative degree program.

Ordination and Consecration are preferred, but may not be required, depending on qualifications of applicant.

Training and understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities of serving in a Muslim environment.

Timeline:

Planned arrival on field for this role is summer 2013.

Work and Living Environment:

The capital is a city of about 700,000 in population. The economy of the country is weak and there is much poverty, though life in the capital city is not uncomfortable. Workers will find the context requires more attention to daily household chores and shopping at marketplaces. Business work, services and ministry requires identification and interaction with people of a much lower economic standard of living than is the norm in the West.

Language Expectations:

It is expected that workers gain ministry-level proficiency in the local language, a process usually involving two years of full-time work as the initial ministry investment.

Expectations for Spouse:

A couple joining this outreach and fellowship-planting effort in this country should both exhibit calling and giftedness to this type of ministry in cross-cultural “Cousins” context. In general, involvement in the work is expected of both spouses, while appropriate adjustments will be made depending upon family size and season.

Children’s Educational Plan and Options:

Local TCK schools are being used by current workers. Homeschooling is an acceptable alternative after the two years of full-time language learning.

Available Housing:

Workers usually begin their time in-country with a “homestay” of at two to four months with a local family, as a means of facilitating initial adaptation an language learning. Beyond this workers are usually housed in simple houses, with appropriate utilities available. Electricity and water can sometimes be unavailable. Voltage is 220.

Health Considerations:

Water filtration is highly encouraged. Local health services are available, but not always deemed best for more serious health needs. Adequate care for such is available within the region.

Status of Witness:

This country is a society of dominant “Cousin” beliefs but of tremendous nominality in practice. The amount of Evangelical believers is estimated to be below .03% of the population. Evangelical fellowships and believers are not well recognized in the society and face some discrimination in light of the dominant religious worldview. Many Evangelical fellowships started in the 1990s are not well-suited to the local cultural and linguistic context of the country today, as it has moved toward greater independence and distinct cultural identity following its decades-long membership in a now-defunct union of nations.

Team Make-up:

The team is currently made up of two families and one single worker who deployed in 2011 (and possibly one other family who plans to deploy in 2012). The Team Leader couple brings to the group previous experience in a neighboring country.

This redefining can happen before, during, or even after the application/interview process.

Ordination and Consecration are preferred, but may not be required, depending on qualifications of applicant.

Timeline:

Planned arrival on field for this role is summer 2013.

Work and Living Environment:

The country’s capital is a city of over one million in population. The economy of this country has experienced much growth and development over the past twenty years. The living situation is comfortable, but not entirely Western standard. Work is carried out in partnership (both formal and informal) with other expat workers and local believers.

Language Expectations:

It is expected that workers gain ministry-level proficiency in the local language, a process usually involving two years of full-time study as the initial ministry investment.

Expectations for Spouse:

A couple joining this outreach and church planting effort in this country should both exhibit calling and giftedness to this type of ministry in cross-cultural context. In general, full-time involvement in the work is expected of both spouses, while appropriate adjustments will be made depending upon family size and season.

Children’s Educational Plan and Options:

Local international schools are being used by current workers. Homeschooling is an acceptable alternative after the two years of full-time language learning.

Available Housing:

Workers are usually housed in comfortable apartment housing, with appropriate utilities available. Electricity and water can infrequently be unavailable. Voltage is 220.

Health Considerations:

Water filtration is encouraged. Local health services are available, but not always deemed best for more serious health needs. Adequate care for such is available within the region.

Status of Christian Witness:

This country is a society of dominant Orthodoxy, but of tremendous nominality in practice. The amount of Evangelical believers is estimated to be below 1% of the population. Evangelical churches and believers are not well recognized in the society and face some discrimination in light of the dominant religious worldview.

Team Make-up:

The team is currently made up of three families and one single worker. The team leader couple is involved in leadership of an international fellowship as well as responsibility for the other team members who began full-time language study in the summer of 2011.

Please see the International Ministries Handbook (C-1) for further qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications:

A minimum of one year of graduate or seminary training in missions and cross-cultural studies from Alliance Theological Seminary or an IM-approved alternative degree program.

Direct experience in leadership of ministry where focus and fruitfulness has resulted in lost people being engaged and brought to faith in Christ.

A ministry track record that indicates the ability to lead in the initiation of new ministry and/or to measurably grow established ministry to new levels.

Cross-cultural experience and/or short-term mission experience.

Timeline:

Planned arrival on field for this role is summer 2013.

Work/Living Environment:

The workers will live, do language study, and work in the Republic of Macedonia, the southernmost former republic of Yugoslavia. Skopje, the capital, has a population of about 900,000 people; smaller cities have populations from about 30,000 to 130,000. All utilities, including internet, are available in all cities. There are also grocery stores and bazaars, some large housewares stores and malls in Skopje where most everyday items can be purchased. Public transportation within cities and towns and to other locations in country and in the Balkans region is affordable and readily accessible; taxis are also very affordable options for transportation.

Children’s Educational Plan/Options:

There are essentially three educational options for families with children in Skopje: (a) Macedonian schools, (b) three international schools, and (c) home-schooling. Skopje’s international schools hold classes in English, and two are fairly affordable. Outside of Skopje, only the first and third options are available.

Available Housing:

Workers in Macedonia usually rent modest, fully-furnished apartments or houses. All will have full 220V electrical service and central heating. Internet is available throughout the country. Electricity in Macedonia is regular.

Health Considerations:

Skopje has basic health care services available as well as several well-run private clinics, dentists, etc.

Geographic Information:

Macedonia is landlocked, bordered by Albania on the west, Greece on the south, Kosovo and Serbia on the north, and Bulgaria to the east. It is 9,779 square miles in size, which is just slightly larger than the size of Vermont. Macedonia is home to a Macedonian majority (around 67 percent) who speaks a Slavic language (Macedonian) and is historically Eastern Orthodox. There is a large Albanian minority (26 percent) with significant Roma and Turkish minorities. There are also Muslim Macedonians (the Torbeshi). The climate is similar to the southern Mid-Atlantic States of the U.S. (Maryland, Virginia) with cool winters and hot summers.

Status of Christian Witness:

Macedonia is 0.1% evangelical with some growing national churches who are our partners in the work, and who have been growing slowly but steadily since the fall of Yugoslav socialism in 1991. All ethnic groups are among the least reached people in the world. Macedonians, who typically are only nominally Orthodox, hold to their traditions quite firmly but are religiously extremely secular, which is a legacy of socialist Yugoslavia. The Albanians in Macedonia are very conservative compared to Albanians in Kosovo and Albania, and there are only a handful of believers among Albanians in Macedonia. Many, from all communities, are very open to discussing issues of faith.

General Information:

Macedonian culture is hospitable and growing numbers of people, particularly youth, speak English. People are generally helpful, but most people in Skopje are quite used to foreigners.

Ministry Team Make-up:

Currently there are three C&MA families working in Macedonia; two in church planting ministry in Kochani, and one as the administrative assistant for the Balkan Field.

Position Type:

International Worker

Description:

In a strategic area of the world with high potential to impact the masses, this people group needs your help. Workers coming to the country will join the existing team to provide education and meet felt needs at a team-run community center, thereby creating opportunities to share the gospel, help people grow in Him, and invite them to join in fellowship with like-minded people. Through the international church, workers will join together to plant a local-language body capable of reproducing itself across the country and region. This work takes a good-sized team to operate. However, once enough staff is in place within this current work, a second team will be launched to one of the satellite cities of 50,000-100,000 that have virtually no witness.

Important Clarification: Applicants need to be aware that serving in the international world typically requires a higher-than-normal degree of grace and flexibility on the part of those applying.
Support or even serve on a new team being sent to another city.

Assist the development of a local language plant under the international church by starting seeker/discipleship Bible studies in the local language with people both within and outside the church.

Support and engage the existing national church through involvement and/or teaching in its pastoral training program.

Assist in hosting short-term teams.

Make new local contacts and develop relationships on a regular basis.

Confidently share the gospel with new people in the local language on a regular basis.

Engage in personal discipleship with those in need.

Make regular use of the home for entertaining contacts.

Regularly communicate effectively and securely with supporting churches and individuals, particularly the existing partnerships.

Contribute to team life and unity by participating in team business, spiritual, and social activities.

Any other duties as assigned by the team Advisory Committee.

Academic Qualifications:

A recognized bachelor’s degree. (both husband and wife if married)

Please see the International Ministries Handbook (C-1) for further qualifications.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master’s Degree, with focus in Inter-Cultural Studies, some other area of applicable ministry training, or work platform related field.

Church planting ministry experience.

Direct experience in leadership of ministry whose focus and fruitfulness has resulted in lost people being engaged and brought to faith and maturity in Christ.

A ministry track record that indicates the ability to lead in the initiation of new ministry and/or measurably grow established ministry to new levels.

Overseas living and ministry experience in conjunction with an Alliance team in excess of three months.

Timeline:

Planned arrival on field for this role is summer 2013.

Work and Living Environment:

Our current city is home to 750,000 people and one of three strategic cities in the region. It is the cultural home of a long-oppressed people and has a proud history of artisans and poets. To build economic strength people go out of their way to learn English from native speakers at the community center, and the culture in general is hospitable to Westerners. As a result the region has been fragile but safe, despite the proximity to an area of unrest. There have been no major instances of terrorism in the region. Electricity and other infrastructure is certainly well behind Western standards, but has improved significantly in the last five years. Unaccompanied women should not be out in public after dark. Hospitality is a high priority and this people group value relationship over task. Opposite from the West, the two topics preferred in a discussion are religion and politics! Through relational outreach and event-based exposure to the gospel, people have a chance to know Him and get involved in the international church leading to the formation of an independent fellowship for this people group.

Language Expectations:

The language is extremely fluid, mixing vocabulary from many of the more dominant regional languages. There are no formal schools, either. Working with tutors, through private study, and in social experience, first-term workers spend a full two years in a self-guided study program to arrive at the Advanced Low level in the ACTFL guidelines. Provision is made for an additional five hours per week for studying language throughout one’s career in order to maximize impact through the culture’s heart language.

Expectations for Spouse:

Full participation in language is expected for both husband and wife. Depending on how many children are in the family, a wife is expected to, at minimum, be involved in the life of the international church, coffee conversation nights, and relational outreach with her own local friends, community center contacts, and international church people. Because of the strong gender division within this society, it is crucial that women be involved in hospitality to spiritually invest in the lives of women.

Children’s Educational Plan and Options:

There are a growing number of options for education. In the city there are two English-based private schools that offer decent education with some Western staff, and do prepare students to study in the West. Several families in the city formed a homeschool co-op which can cover all grades. Besides personal homeschooling, there are also local schools. These are often sub-par and will not qualify a child for university in the West.

Available Housing:

Housing is usually a rented house in a neighborhood setting, preferably within a few kilometers of the Community Center. Houses need some work to become livable, as usually they come without kitchens or any kind of ventilation. (The team would assist in setting up a house.) Electricity is 220v, but notoriously unreliable. There are voltage spikes and we can go several hours without power in the peak usage seasons. This takes a toll on appliances and computer batteries. Water is collected in holding tanks on rooftops when it is delivered for about two hours every other day. Reasonably-priced internet is available in both DSL and WiFi/3G forms. It is steadily increasing in speed and bandwidth, but can cut in and out. Cell phones are inexpensive and reliable.

Health Considerations:

In general, health care access is good while health care quality is poor. There is modern equipment, but little training in modern technique. Basic sanitary precautions are not necessarily taken. Still, there are an abundance of doctors, pharmacies, and hospitals in the city. Those considering coming to this area should be in good health, with no serious chronic illnesses.

Geographic Information:

This area is about half rugged mountains and half rolling hills/plains. Summers are extremely hot and dry with temps hitting close to 120 F from May until September. Winters can be chilly and wet from November to March, with temps getting below freezing at night. Houses are poorly insulated so air conditioners are a must in the summer, as are heaters in the winter.

Status of Work:

The need is great in this area. Out of nearly 5,000,000 people there may be 5,000 who have decided, and only 500 who are involved in some kind of house fellowship. However, the potential is very high! Even though the majority religion still pervades society, when compared to other countries in the greater region, many people are open to a new way. In order to initiate work outside this one city, though, we need more workers committed to serving people and fellowships to spread across the land.

General Information:

Vehicles are affordable, with five-seat sedans starting around $14,000 and light SUVs $17,000. Taxis are prevalent, but somewhat expensive. Buses are cheapest, but have no set timetable or printed routes. Dress varies, but in general follows western styles with a high emphasis on modesty. People rarely go to a meeting, or even shopping, without dressing up. There are no restaurant chains, but there are many places serving western food. Hundreds of small sandwich shops offer hamburgers, pulled chicken sandwiches, kebabs, and small pizzas. Local food is usually rice, a stew, and beans, chicken, or ground beef. A staple with every meal is flatbread. In general food is salty and oily. This people group also eats a variety of fruits and vegetables familiar to the westerner. Reasonably priced western food is available in newer supermarkets.

Team Make-up:

The Community Center has a stated mandate for education and is part of a registered non-religious, non-political American NGO. It is crucial that the center meet actual felt needs of the people and that all team members be involved. To function at this level long-term staff must work closely together with each other and interns/Envision participants.

Hillcrest International School (HIS) is a school in Sentani, Papua, Indonesia for Missionary Kids. HIS needs a dorm parenting couple for Fall 2012 to minister in a hostel on campus, providing a home for 12-13 children of mostly high school age (an occasional junior higher).
