General Information:

CIA World Factbook—Burkina Faso

Work and Living Environment:

Bobo-Dioulasso is the second largest city in Burkina Faso. With a growing population and expanding city limits, it is an exciting place where people of all ethnic groups and faiths live together. Mission housing is available and includes electricity, running water, and Internet access.

Status of Christian Witness:

The Joshua Project—Burkina Faso

Language Expectations:

Language is an essential part of ministry. IWs receive one year of intensive language and cultural study followed by a year of half-time language study within the context of ministry. Fluency in French is required. For most, this will include one year of formal language study in France, followed by one to two years of Jula language and cultural studies in Burkina Faso.

Health Considerations:

Burkina Faso has the same health challenges found throughout West Africa. The heat during dry season can be challenging.Though hospitals and clinics are numerous, doctors are overworked, and diagnostic equipment is not always available. Bobo-Dioulasso would not be a good place for someone with chronic health issues or those that require frequent monitoring.

Expectations for Spouse:

Many ministry opportunities are availablefor both spouses, depending on the age of children, gifts, training, abilities, and the team’s needs. Both husband and wife  also are expected to strive for fluency in French and expectedto be meaningfully involved in meeting ministry objectives.

Children’s Educational Plan and Options:

A French school and homeschooling families provide local educational opportunities for children. A small English-speaking youth group meets regularly, and opportunities to interact with youth in other cities are available.Church Sunday schools and club programs provide ways for third-culture kids  to connect with Burkinabè youth. A homeschooling co-op in Ouagadougou is available for those desiring to join other families for teaching sessions that include science experiments, drama classes, and standardized testing.

Compensation:

This position is designated to be funded through the Great Commission Fund (GCF). We offer compensation for this position, covering costs related to a monthly living allowance, housing, travel, children’s education, and full benefits. Please visit our compensation page for details on how U.S. Alliance international workers are supported. GCF-funded workers share responsibility for raising GCF dollars through Alliance churches and other sources.

Whole-Life Health:

The C&MA is an evangelical denomination committed to planting churches both in the United States and internationally. Due to the nature of this ministry opportunity, some of the required qualifications include optimal emotional, physical, and spiritual health. These will be assessed as you move forward in the application process.

Important Clarification:

Applicants should be aware that serving in the international world often requires a higher degree of grace and flexibility. For example, overseas teams can be suddenly and unexpectedly impacted by illness, government decisions, financial realities, team changes, or other factors beyond the team’s control. The challenge for applicants is that these factors can sometimes necessitate the sudden redefining of a position, which may take place before, during, or after the application/interview process has begun or is completed.
