Timeline for Deployment:

Late summer 2019. All appointees are required to attend a cross-cultural and language acquisition program and Pre-Field Orientation prior to deploying.

General Information:

In this resistant and strict province there have been unparalleled natural disasters.  After these calamities, the C&MA field responded immediately. CAMA Services mobilized personnel and funding to assist in the relief and recovery efforts. As circumstances have changed over the years, it has become increasingly more difficult for foreigners to continue to work and live in the province. By God’s grace and  the good work He has allowed us to participate in, we are now among only a handful of teams who remain.

Work and Living Environment:

Following completion of language study, depending on the dynamics on the ground, the worker will either be located in the capital city or in a small, rural town two and a half hours from the capital where the business and foundation are located. The town is on one of the most beautiful stretches of pristine coastline in Southeast Asia, and there are few foreigners or believers. The capital has a population of about 800,000 and a small community of English-speaking believers. Locals are gentle and hospitable. A history of conflict stretching back to colonial times has earned locals a reputation of being more forthright and independent.

The team member will live in a rented home in a strategic location. The applicant must be willing to live in the local community with all the unique joys and challenges this brings. Many dry goods and a wide selection of fruits, vegetables, seafood, poultry, and occasionally beef is available in local stores and markets. Many local dry goods are available, and some imported foods (such as cheeses, dried pasta, peanut butter, etc.) are available in the capital. Many local kitchen and household furnishings as well as some electronics are available in the town. A broader selection of household items, including imported/Western goods, is available in the capital.

Status of Christian Witness:

Only 0.08 percent of the majority people group is evangelical. There are no officially recognized gatherings of believers. Meetings must be discrete, and believers face the possibility of significant persecution.

Language Expectations:

Language is an essential part of ministry. International workers receive one year of intensive language and cultural study followed by language study done in the context of ministry. The goal will be to speak, read, and write in order to share the good news of Jesus. One year of intensive language and cultural learning will take place in Bandung followed by on-site language and cultural acquisition studies.

Health Considerations:

We have an emergency-room registered nurse who has served in the town and the capital. She is currently stateside and is eager to assist with immediate medical needs remotely. The town has several small pharmacies with a good selection of medications available, but outside medical consultations for prescriptions would be necessary for anything beyond basic care. The hospital in the town is quite basic and the quality of care is inconsistent. Better care is available in the capital but remains below international standards. International quality care is available in Penang or Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as well as Singapore, all of which are approximately a one and a half  hour flight from the capital.

Expectations for Spouse:

Spousal roles vary based on the spouse’s gifts, training, and abilities, as well as the needs of the team. It is expected that both spouses will be meaningfully involved in meeting ministry objectives, depending on the nature of family roles, children, etc.

Children’s Educational Plan and Options:

If the teacher hired for this position has grade school-aged children, they can attend the homeschool co-op along with the other third culture kids. It is currently the only available U.S. college preparatory education option in the city. Schools taught in the local language are available, as well as bilingual options in the capital. Junior and senior high-school boarding options are available at Dalat International School in Penang, Malaysia.

Compensation:

This position is designated to be funded through the Great Commission Fund (GCF). We offer compensation for this position, covering costs related to a monthly living allowance, housing, travel, children’s education, and full benefits. Please visit our compensation page for details on how U.S. Alliance international workers are supported. GCF-funded workers share responsibility for raising GCF dollars through Alliance churches and other sources.

Whole-Life Health:

The C&MA is an evangelical denomination committed to planting churches both in the United States and internationally. Due to the nature of this ministry opportunity, part of the required qualifications include optimal emotional, spiritual, and physical health. These will be assessed as you move forward in the application process.

Important Clarification:

Applicants should be aware that serving in the international world often requires a higher degree of grace and flexibility. For example, overseas teams can be suddenly and unexpectedly impacted by illness, government decisions, financial realities, team changes, or other factors beyond the team’s control. The challenge for applicants is that these factors can sometimes necessitate the sudden redefining of a position, which may take place before, during, or after the application/interview process has begun or is completed.
