Position Type

  • International worker—vocational track
  • English-as-a-second-language (ESL) ministry
  • Creative-access location
  • Self-subscribed
  • Single or couple

We live in a postmodern Asian country where people do not see the need for God in their lives, and few venture into churches on their own. Teaching English provides a practical, meaningful bridge to enter into relationships with people here. Through classes, children and youth camps, parenting and peacemaking training, and English meet-ups, we are able to spend time with people and talk about deep issues. In addition, a business-as-mission model provides daily opportunities to help a team of early-career local Christians deepen their walk with God and learn to engage people with the gospel. We need workers to join us in expanding these efforts to have greater impact!

Required Qualifications:

  • ESL teaching certificate and/or two years of teaching experience
  • Enjoyment of teaching and working with children and/or youth
  • Native English speaker with strong writing and speaking skills
  • Completion of Alliance Polity course
  • Completion of the Perspectives on the World Christian Movement course or equivalent
  • A minimum Modern Language Aptitude Test (MLAT) score of 60

Biblical Qualifications Desired:

  • Christ-centered character
  • Spirit-empowered ministry
  • Spiritual leadership
  • Commitment to a healthy lifestyle
  • Biblical alignment
  • Hunger for God
  • Team player
  • Teachable spirit
  • Ability to be proactive
  • Flexibility

  • Teach English in classes, clubs, and camps
  • Use prepared lesson plans for teaching with some lesson development
  • Develop relationships with students and families
  • Participate in English meet-ups

Timeline for Deployment:

Late summer 2020. Once appointed and fundraising and other qualification criteria are met. All appointees are required to attend a cross-cultural and language acquisition program and Pre-Field Orientation prior to deploying.

General Information:

In this densely populated Asian country, buses and subways are filled to capacity daily.

Work and Living Environment:

The team member will live in an apartment within walking distance of team’s office in a rapid growing city of 10 million people. You will teach at an English training center daily where team members work five of seven days, with Sunday’s off. Travel is by subway, bus, taxi, motor scooters, or bikes. There is convenient grocery shopping and natural landscape to enjoy.

Status of Christian Witness:

From childhood, the people are taught that there is no God, and money and education are idolized. Yet people are looking for answers about the meaning of life, hope, relationships, inner peace, and faith. Our team serves in an area where less than 2 percent are Christians. There is a growing Christian church here, and it is seeking to be missional and relevant to society. It needs encouraging, strengthening, and continual modeling of incarnational ways to reach people with the gospel.

Language Expectations:

Language is an essential part of ministry. International workers receive one year of intensive language and cultural study followed by a year of part-time language study done in the context of ministry. The goal will be to speak, read, and write in order to share the good news of Jesus. Our language training school’s teachers provide one-on-one instruction. We tailor language programs to fit our students. A local language coach will be assigned to guide each student’s study program.

Health Considerations:

Frequent walking is required, stairs are common, and there is limited wheelchair access. The weather includes damp cold winters and hot humid summers, but fall and spring are pleasant. Periodic poor air quality can aggravate asthma. However, it is still an enjoyable place to live. A willing heart and a sense of God’s direction enable many people to adapt well to this environment.

Expectations for Spouse:

Spousal roles vary based on the spouse’s gifts, training, and abilities, as well as the needs of the team. It is expected that both spouses will be meaningfully involved in meeting ministry objectives, depending on the nature of family roles, children, etc. Our team also has other non-English teaching opportunities for involvement. We desire people to serve where they feel most effective.

Children’s Educational Plan and Options:

Educational options include an international school run by Christians, local schools, and homeschooling.

Once appointed, funds must be subscribed through the applicant’s network of friends and family, local church, or other resources. Cost information will be made available upon application.

Whole-Life Health:

The C&MA is an evangelical denomination committed to planting churches both in the United States and internationally. Due to the nature of this ministry opportunity, part of the required qualifications include optimal emotional, spiritual, and physical health. These will be assessed as you move forward in the application process.

Important Clarification:

Applicants should be aware that serving in the international world often requires a higher degree of grace and flexibility. For example, overseas teams can be suddenly and unexpectedly impacted by illness, government decisions, financial realities, team changes, or other factors beyond the team’s control. The challenge for applicants is that these factors can sometimes necessitate the sudden redefining of a position, which may take place before, during, or after the application/interview process has begun or is completed.
