Ministerial Study Program
The self-study method is designed for people who have heard God's call to ministry in a mid-career situation, but who are unable to attend a Bible college or seminary to get their training. Because the self-study mode requires well-developed study skills, the person studying in this mode should have at least two years of college. Although the student does his or her work under the supervision of a coach appointed by the district, he or she is primarily studying on his/her own, and meets periodically with the coach. This study method requires a greater level of motivation and self-disciple than studying in the guided study mode.
The guided study method is for those people who feel called to ministry, but who may be limited by language or lack the study skills to read a book, digest it, and use that knowledge to do a project. These people need closer supervision in order to meet the course requirements. The person studying in the guided study mode should meet weekly with his or her coach, and will receive weekly assignments. However, because there are weekly assignments, the pace of study may be slower than that of a well-motivated person in the self-study mode.
To enroll in the Ministerial Study Program, the candidate must contact the office of the district in which he or she resides, and request the Ministerial Study Program enrollment packet. The packet contains:
- A student application form
- A congregational approval form
- A schedule of course completion
- Instructions
Many of the courses in the Ministerial Study Program use an "interactive logging" approach. As the student reads the textbooks, he/she is to "interact," that is, write a personal response (log) to what he/she is reading. In other courses the student will use a study guide to complete his/her work.
Most of the courses require that a project or paper be turned in to the Church Leadership Academy office for evaluation. The paper or project will be evaluated by experienced personnel, who will make comments and suggestions to the student about his/her progress.
Upon completion of the Ministerial Study Program, the student will receive a Certificate of Ministerial Studies.
Students who have received some theological training at an accredited institution may receive credit for up to seven courses in the Ministerial Study Program, upon submission of an official transcript of credits. For further information, please contact the Church Leadership Academy at (719) 599-5999.
The Ministerial Study Program is not officially accredited by an accrediting association, nor is it a degree program.
However, the Ministerial Study Program of the Church Leadership Academy is recognized by Crown College, which will give 2/3 credit for MSP courses toward Crown College requirements. Students may take classes through the Crown Online Program and the Ministerial Study Program simultaneously, or they may finish the Ministerial Study Program first, and then complete their degree at Crown College. Either way, all classes will be counted toward Crown College requirements for purposes of GPA, course requirements and residency. If interested contact Crown College at (952) 446-4100) or crown@crown.edu.
