Several buildings and homes were damaged in an 8.4 earthquake that struck this week off the southwest coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, killing 18 people. C&MA national church staff members are all reportedly safe and have been visiting church members to assess potential needs.
“The damage could have been much worse,” said field director David Nagel. “But the force of the earthquake went out to sea rather than toward land.”
The Indonesia government, military, and other relief agencies have responded to the situation. “We are continuing to make assessments to determine isolated areas that may need help,” Nagel said.
