Second Earthquake Rocks Haiti

Editor’s note: The following is an update to previous coverage of the Alliance response to the earthquake that struck Haiti on Tuesday, January 12.

On January 20, 6:03 a.m. EST, a second earthquake registering 6.1 hit 35 miles WSW of Port-au-Prince. Reports say the aftershock rattled people struggling to recover from last week’s quake that devastated the impoverished country.

Phil Skellie, president of CAMA (Compassion and Mercy Associates), the Alliance relief and development arm, is scheduled to meet with the Southeastern District of the C&MA today to discuss the logistics of distributing aid to the Haitian people as soon as possible. Items to be discussed include the possible entry of district volunteers into Haiti through the Dominican Republic (DR) field.

CAMA will be working with John Schleh, field director for DR, and the Dominican Alliance to distribute much-needed water and food relief through Haitian Alliance churches.

Despite reports of millions of Haitians waiting to receive assistance, aid has been getting in to the impoverished nation. World Relief, an Alliance sister organization already on the ground in Haiti when the first quake struck, has been providing food and water to thousands of people every day.

“We shipped in thousands of pounds of food from DR and trucked in thousands of gallons of fuel,” says a World Relief spokesperson. “We are already shipping medicines in through our partners. The shipment of fuel is a huge answer to prayer . . . fuel has been incredibly scarce and is necessary for both powering vehicles as well as generators to keep [our] hospital running.”

The long-term recovery process will likely take years. The country, particularly Port-au-Price, will essentially need to be rebuilt from scratch, says the World Relief spokesperson. Give Now
