Metropolitan District: Hurricane Sandy Update

Editor’s note: The following are brief updates from Metropolitan District Alliance churches/members affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Center Point Church, Bellmore, New York, on Long Island: “Sunday services are on!” says Pastor Brian McMillan. “Bellmore Movies has graciously donated their space to us on Sunday morning. As most of you know, Long Beach and Island Park were crushed by Sandy. We need as much help as possible! Our church was flooded, and the facility is unusable.”

Community Life Chapel, Parsippany, New Jersey: The church is being used as a daytime shelter, manned with volunteers from 8 a.m.–8 p.m. People in need receive heat, food, water, coffee, and electricity to charge cell phones and use the Internet.

Risen King Alliance Church in New City, New York: Several church members’ homes were affected by Hurricane Sandy, including an apartment destroyed by fire and a home crushed by a tree. A woman and her daughter were sitting on the living room couch when the tree came through the roof, landing next to them. Praise God for sparing their lives! Please pray for the situation and for the people who have been left homeless.

Visionary Church in Jersey City: There was some structural damage caused by flooding. Church member Wan Kim says, “Leaders of Visionary Church responded immediately to the situation by calling and sending e-mails to members to make sure all were safe. A Friday cleanup is being organized by Pastor Yeathus Johnson. We will remove debris and clean the church as well as two homes.”

Please pray for:

  • wisdom for leaders of Visionary Church as they provide guidance in the midst of chaos.
  • those affected by Sandy, that they find strength and hope in the Lord.
  • God to work in us through this experience as we strive to become a more missional community.
