Update: New Life Center

The following was adapted from Brian and Mika Reaser’s recent blog post. The Reasers serve with Compassion and Mercy Associates (CAMA) in Ishinomaki, Japan, the area hardest hit by the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami. They will soon be joined by Alan and Jill Kropp, who serve with International Ministries, following their home assignment.

The New Life Center (NLC), where we are living, is the base of operations for Alliance ministry in Ishinomaki, Japan. Samaritan’s Purse staff, Alliance international workers Jane and Harry Landaw, and many volunteers did an excellent job removing the mud and remodeling the house.

While most of the work on the house itself has been completed, there are still minor repairs and some large projects to be done, such as painting the exterior, building a deck, and installing a sidewalk.

It is hard to imagine now, but, according to our neighbors, nine cars were piled in the front yard after the tsunami. Understandably, the parking area and retaining wall were damaged and are still in need of repair.

One thing we have heard repeatedly from people in the community is that they “just want to forget what happened.” Individuals who have been through traumatic events need a place where they can gather and feel comfortable enough to talk about their experiences.

As the NLC is completed, we feel like it is a place where this can happen.

Pray that God will use this building and neighborhood for His glory. Also, pray that those who visit will feel welcome and secure here.

Ishinomaki, Japan—One Year Later

On March 11, 2011, Japan suffered the greatest destruction and loss of life since World War II. A 9.0- magnitude earthquake, followed by a devastating tsunami and nuclear reactor accident, created a “triple disaster.” One year later, Alliance workers are bringing help and hope to the people of Ishinomaki, one of the hardest-hit areas of the catastrophe. On March 29, 2012, the New Life Center was dedicated.
