By Alliance workers in Germany
The Berlin Urban Ministry Project (BUMP) is a new initiative of the C&MA Team in Berlin. The team has seen that outreaches such as cooking classes, Lego brunches, and art exhibits are great ways to connect with people in the area. “We believe people are more willing to respond to an invitation to a social gathering than to church,” Alliance workers write. Located across the street from Freischwimmer, an Alliance church plant, BUMP provides the workers with a place where these outreaches can occur.
Rachel,* an immigrant, began attending the women’s cooking class more than a year ago. Shortly after that, she responded to the Alliance workers’ invitation to attend a Freischwimmer service. There, she connected with two Alliance teammates who speak the language of her homeland. Rachel joined the workers’ Bible study this spring and recently chose to begin a relationship with Jesus.
Along with current initiatives through BUMP, plans are under way to begin a mom’s group, English and craft classes, youth clubs, and more. “We continually look for ‘nonthreatening’ ways to get to know people who wouldn’t be willing to attend church but are looking for relationship,” says one Alliance team member.
“Our work can look quite ordinary,” a teammate adds. “Then, suddenly, it happens-God turns the ordinary into something extraordinary!”
