ROOM to DREAM

A clip of former Alliance president Paul Bubna was played during the current president's vision cast.

Thursday morning’s general session featured an appearance (via archived video) by one of The Alliance’s beloved past presidents, the late Dr. Paul Bubna. “My role is to keep the missionary movement alive that is the heart of this denomination. . . ,” Dr. Bubna said during his Sunday morning message at General Council 1996. “When we, as a denomination, no longer give our tithe [10 percent] to missions then we are no longer a missionary church.”

Dr. John Stumbo shares the same burden—to cement the missionary zeal of The Christian and Missionary Alliance. If 10 percent becomes the minimum of GCF giving for every Alliance church in the United States, Dr. Stumbo assured the delegates and guests that the denominational leaders can once again begin to dream—of expanding ministry, of sending more international workers, and of planting more churches, especially in urban settings.

“I like The Alliance our mothers and fathers handed to us,” Dr. Stumbo proclaimed. “This is not a bad story; it’s a fabulous story.” Though GCF giving has dropped significantly, change can happen if churches work together. “The trajectory must be stopped. It will take will, courage, and leadership.”
