On February 6 nearly 1,000 people gathered to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the dedication of Koutiala Hospital for Women and Children in southeastern Mali.
During the past 10 years, Koutiala Hospital’s life-giving medical outreach has included:
- Treating more than 80,000 patients;
- Delivering about 17,000 babies;
- Conducting 1,556 C-sections and 6,288 surgeries; and
- Staffing more than 90,000 prenatal consultations and nearly 69,000 general consultations.
At the celebration, local and regional officials voiced their sincere thanks to hospital staff for all they are doing to improve the health of women and children in Koutiala and the surrounding region. The needs are huge in this West African nation, one of the 25 poorest countries in the world.
According to the World Factbook, in 2015 Mali had the second-highest infant mortality rate in the world. About 1 in 10 children in this country dies before reaching his or her first birthday.
Not only has the physical health of the Malian population improved but many hearts have been touched spiritually. Hundreds of patients as well as family members and friends—most steeped in West Africa’s predominant religion—have found wholeness in Christ through the hospital’s evangelistic efforts.
