A year ago, Jane and Harry Landaw answered God’s call to plant a church in Ishinomaki, located in one of the hardest-hit areas of the March 2011 tsunami disaster and known as Japan’s “spiritually dark” region. Last month, just as the Landaws and their ministry partners were preparing for the opening of the New Life Center, Jane was diagnosed with cancer. Yet even in Jane’s suffering, the Lord has been at work to bring new life to the people of Japan.

On March 11, 2011, Japan suffered the greatest destruction and loss of life since World War II. A 9.0- magnitude earthquake, followed by a devastating tsunami and nuclear reactor accident, created a triple disaster.
One year later, Alliance workers are bringing help and hope to the people of Ishinomaki, one of the hardest-hit areas of the catastrophe, located in Japan’s spiritually dark region.

The Youngs are using Hope House, which is located near a major hospital, as an outreach to people who have spiritual and emotional needs as they deal with hospitalized relatives. Doors are opening for ministry to doctors and nurses within the hospital, as well.

The Tokyo Journal reports that “thousands of Japanese [are] flocking to gospel singing workshops to clap their hands and sing praise to Jesus.” African-American gospel music has become very popular in Japan, and the phenomenon has inspired a new outreach by Kawaguchi Church, an Alliance congregation in Japan.

More than 80 people in Japan heard the gospel, most for the very first time, during a Christmas outreach in a churchless mountain town. They sang Christmas carols, enjoyed a puppet show, and took home gifts of food and Christmas tracts. And they heard “Kentucky Santa” tell them about the real meaning of Christmas.
