Site Info
Located in Southeast Asia, Taiwan is a little smaller than Maryland and Delaware combined. With a population of 23 million people, 84 percent are Taiwanese, 14 percent are from Mainland China, and 2 percent are indigenous people groups. Prominent religions are Buddhism and Taoism with 93 percent of the population as adherents. Just 4.5 percent are Christians and 2.5 percent are categorized as various.
Many young people in Taiwan would not consider stepping into a traditional Taiwanese church. Instead they long for the steady pulse of entertainment, shopping, and restaurants. The Ximen Ding district of Taipei is just that kind of place.
Visitors typically begin streaming into Ximen around noon and by 4 p.m. the streets are crowded with teenagers and 20-somethings. Amid the crowds are many homeless and beggars weaving through the masses. The buildings are old but continually receive "makeovers" as new shops come in and redesign. This is the place we can be the aroma of Christ to those we meet and the place we dream of seeing a vibrant, life-giving church.
With that vision, we are active in Ximen. Our coffeehouse (The Aroma Project) offers a safe place with a positive environment providing opportunity for personal and spiritual relationship building. Three Bible studies meet each week and a monthly dinner and worship service is open to all. Weekly outreach times in Ximen are spent talking to, praying for, and inviting people to our events. Periodically, we serve the homeless in our community through various service projects. In our spare time we meet up with friends, plan language exchanges, and do whatever we can to strengthen our connections to the people of Ximen helping them know God's love more and more.
You can be involved through group short-term Envision Trips where you will meet people, build friendships, work the coffeehouse, participate in language exchange and Bible studies, and join in worship services. You can also be involved through more specific ministries like art, music, skateboarding, magic, teaching English, evangelism, etc.
If you are interested in long-term opportunities, you might consider joining our team for a one-year internship. We help all of our interns find a job teaching English, which gives them a good support base as well as provides their visa so that they can live in Taiwan for a year. Each intern lives with our team in community, teaches English, and serves in the ministry.
