Living Truths
July 1902-September 1907
Living Truths was edited and published by Dr. A. B. Simpson (1843-1919), president of The Christian and Missionary Alliance and pastor of the Gospel Tabernacle. His name is not given as the editor or publisher and seldom appears with articles he wrote.
Simpson had been publishing weekly Gospel tracts to which people subscribed for an annual fee of fifty cents. They, too, were entitled Living Truths. He also published biweekly paperbacks for what he called The Colportage Library. The subscription price barely covered the cost, but Simpson’s aim was a wide distribution of helpful Christian literature. In 1902, when postal rates were increased, Simpson could no longer afford to publish this literature and both publications ceased.
By July 1902 Simpson decided to combine the two publications into a single periodical. He also decided to go “incognito,” hoping that people who resisted “higher Christian life” teaching might read the magazine and discover a better life “in Christ.” He encouraged readers of his periodical, The Christian and Missionary Alliance Weekly, to subscribe to Living Truths, not only for themselves but for friends who needed its message.
Some of Simpson’s finest writings occur in Living Truths. Several pages of editorials each month also reveal the extent of Simpson’s world-wide interests: religious and political, social, economic, etc. Other contributors to the magazine were also of a high caliber and published significant articles. In case you wonder as to the identity of J. G. H. Simpson, author of several articles, he is James Gordon Simpson, second son of Dr. A. B. Simpson. He died in October 1907.
When Living Truths officially ended publication, it was combined with Simpson’s other magazine, The Christian and Missionary Alliance.
