Prayer Letter/Ministry Update

photo

This fall, we have abundant opportunity here at Hope Medical Center. Pray for us as our staff gets to hear national pastors each morning during our devotional time. The topics are such things as: "Who is God?" "How do we worship God?" " Why do we worship God?" "Why do we serve God?" "How can we serve God?" It is an opportunity for our Christian staff from 5 different people groups to grow in their personal walk with God. Please pray that each of us would grow in our hunger for God and service for Him. Pray that if there are any among the 30 staff members who are not Christian, that they would take this opportunity to surrender to Jesus.

While the staff is starting its day at these great devotionals, between 50-100 patients/family members are waiting to be seen-and so we take this opportunity to give an evangelistic message translated into three different languages. All of this occurs before 8 in the morning. It sets the foundation for the day and gives purpose to the work. Once the patient care begins, in addition to offering prayer or faith flags to patients, we are increasing our quality and training our national workers to provide medical care in a way that conveys God's love. Please pray that we would have discernment on when to take the opportunity to speak with words and when to take the opportunity to speak with only actions.

Also this month (Sept 29 - Oct 17), pray for the expanded ministry opportunity provided by a facial surgery team from Mercy Ships. They will be coming inland to Hope Medical Center. This will provide the opportunity to provide surgeries such as cleft lip repair to people who otherwise are without that opportunity. Speaking of otherwise without the opportunity; that is why we are here - to give people, who otherwise would not hear, the opportunity to hear the Good News of the Gospel. We serve in an area inhabited by several different people groups; 3 of these people groups are designated as "Least Reached". Least Reached peoples has been defined as where there are less than 2% Evangelicals and Less than 5% Christian Adherents. When these lost people come to Hope Medical Center, they have the opportunity to be born again.

Pray too, as this is currently the time of year for initiation into the devil society. Young men (age 9 - 20ish) are taken into the forest where they stay for one to three months with other members of the devil society. Despite being here for one year, specifics on what happens in these initiations are kept rather quiet and we are still naive. The young men are "tattooed" by knives making hash marks (1 to 3 inch gashes) across their abdomens, backs, and shoulders. It seems almost each village has a devil society, and it is this society in Yalenzou that destroyed the Christian church. So in our innocence, Lindsay took a walk into town today, and came across 10 teenage boys, carrying wild striped umbrellas, wearing bright beach towels across their shoulders, and a few wearing baby bonnets on their heads. Having just finished a book about a woman living in Cote d Ivoire, where the writer described starting some theater projects and how excited local people were to perform, Lindsay assumed that these young men were going to do a performance. Pushing a stroller with all 3 kids, she asked the boys, "Oh! Are you actors? Are you going to do a skit? Do you dance? Do you sing?" They all approached the side of the road and stared rather menacingly at first, then dumbfounded, saying nothing except for the youngest who giggled a little. Finally she said, "Do you speak French?" Someone mumbled yes, but nothing more was said. She repeated the line of questions, then explained that she had to go up the road but was returning in a few minutes and would love to see the performance. When she returned they had all disappeared. Upon returning to the clinic and talking with a local friend, describing the situation, she was told that these were the initiates who had just come out of the forest. Whoops!!! It did in some bizarre way appear much like college hazing.

We want to take this opportunity to thank you for your partnership in the ministry at Hope Medical Center. Whether it is through participating in our solar upgrade, or sending encouraging emails, or through consistent prayer, or through financial contributions, you are part of this opportunity to extend God's hands to a hurting world-and God's voice to a hopeless one.

Dale, Abby and Rebekah are taking advantage of opportunities this fall. Rebekah has taken the opportunity to grow her first tooth and to advance from crawling to cruising. Abby has taken the opportunity to start imaginative play with Dale. And Dale has taken the opportunity to - along with Abby - recite books that they have read. Their current favorite: "Twas the Night Before Christmas."

Thanks for partnering with us,

Drew & Lindsay

Pray.

The Alliance believes wholeheartedly in the power and necessity of prayer. We cannot “Live the Call Together” unless prayer is central to all we do—as a denomination, as churches, and as individuals.

Give.

You can help build Christ’s Church around the world by donating online to the Great Commission Fund. This fund finances our missionaries, allowing them to focus on ministry rather than raising their own support.

Serve.

Is God calling you to full-time service? Do you want to experience missions firsthand by participating in a short-term missions trip? We want to help you connect your passion with God’s purpose.
