Prayer Letter/Ministry Update

October 25, 2009

We thank you for your prayers this past month. At the beginning of the month, Ron did evangelism training with two couples that had come from Tofield, Alberta, and members of the Abundant Life Church here in Brazzaville. They each went with a team in the neighborhood of the Abundant Life church. Fifty-nine people made decisions to follow Christ and two people they prayed with were healed.

Ron also worked with the SFR team to get a report written from the four days of meetings in September. Ron emailed this out on Friday and our team is grateful for the input and direction received through this process. A major decision coming of these meetings was that our team is planning to complete our work in Congo and transition to other ministries in the next five to eight years. As we do prepare for this, we desire to see the two Christian Study Centers totally in the hands of church leadership, to develop with the church, leadership training for small towns and villages of Congo, to participate all we can in church planting efforts of the church, and to encourage the church in its missionary vision.

Ruth spent the month preparing to teach a class beginning tomorrow on Contextual Theology. Hannah and she traveled today to Kinshasa by boat, and then to Boma by road (about an eight hour trip); they arrived safely. There Ruth will teach at the Boma Theological Seminary.

A couple challenges this past month have been:
- Ron, Ruth, and Hannah all have been sick, but are feeling better.
- We lost another phone, my palm, and Ruth's computer quit working.
- A fire caused significant damage to a downtown power station. Some have been without electricity for three weeks. We had electricity for a day or two, then off for a day or two.

The kids are doing well. Travis has a very busy semester, but is making it. He is enjoying his history and education courses. Brandon is making a good adjustment to Wheaton. He finished playing on four different intramural soccer teams! Leticia is missing being home, but enjoys her dorm, is getting through geometry and chemistry, and loving the play she is in. Hannah enjoys her friends, playing in English and French.

After Ruth and Hannah get home, we will leave on Thursday, November 5, taking a week's vacation in Dakar. We will be there for the weekend for the play Leticia is in. We are looking forward to being with her for this week. We will return to Brazzaville on November 11.

Let us know how we can pray for you. Thank you for support for us through friendship, prayers, and financial contributions.

Update October 29, 2009
This is a quick update on Ruth and Hannah's trip to Boma, Dem. Rep. of Congo.

They arrived safely last Sunday evening and Ruth began teaching on Monday. She has had four good days of classes.

However, Hannah has had a fever the whole time that they have been there. So, they will leave tomorrow (Friday). They will travel to Kinshasa (about an 8 hour road trip) and then will plan to cross the river to Brazzaville late afternoon.

Pray also for Hannah's healing. She had a fever for about eight days a couple of weeks ago, and then was feeling better. We will take her to a doctor, Lord willing, on Saturday.

Ruth and Hannah were planning to visit Bienvenu (our "adopted" Congolese son) on Saturday. He is studying not far from Boma. They will no longer be able to make this trip. Pray also for Bienvenu.

The class that Ruth was going to teach on Friday (10/30), she will teach next Spring when she goes to Boma to teach again.

Ruth and Hannah's trip went well yesterday. They arrived in Brazzaville around 3 PM. I was with the Harvey family. Joe Harvey is a medical doctor, so he was able to give Hannah a checkup. Hannah has been complaining about a sore stomach for about two weeks. So, Joe put her and Ruth and me on a worm treatment (something we should do quarterly living in the tropics). He said that her symptoms could very well be caused by intestinal worms.

Hannah slept well without a fever and is enjoying playing with her things today. We praise God that He has brought healing to Hannah.

Ruth had not been feeling great this week, and last night she had a fever. This morning, she is feeling some better. We are praying now for her healing.

On Wednesday, Ron has an important meeting at noon with the church president and a leader of one of the church’s national ministries. This is an important meeting for the future of this ministry. He would appreciate your prayers that they would be in tune with God’s leading as they meet.

We have three days of work next week before leaving on Thursday to be with Leticia. We are looking forward to this.

Prayer Requests

1. Pray for the Abundant Life Church as they continue follow-up with new believers.

2. Pray for Ron as he leads the Congo team in the implementation of the SFR recommendations.

3. Pray that the students that Ruth taught at the Boma Theological Seminary develop the capacity to do theology that is in keeping with their context.

4. Pray that Bienvenu would sense God's peace and presence in the absence of their visit.

5. Pray for the meeting Ron has on Wednesday (11/4) with the church president and a national church ministry leader as they discuss the future of this ministry.

5. Please pray for safety in our travels these upcoming weeks.

6. Pray that we may be bold witnesses to the saving power of Jesus Christ. There are many right in our apartment complex who do not know Jesus. Pray that God will give us wisdom in sharing Christ's love with our Hindu neighbors and West African Muslims that God has brought into our lives.

Thank you so much for standing with us in prayer!

Pray.

The Alliance believes wholeheartedly in the power and necessity of prayer. We cannot “Live the Call Together” unless prayer is central to all we do—as a denomination, as churches, and as individuals.

You can help build Christ’s Church around the world by donating online to the Great Commission Fund. This fund finances our missionaries, allowing them to focus on ministry rather than raising their own support.
