Jim & Sharon Kendall Letter May 2013
We praise God that Jim’s last PSA is now reduced to 4.75, which is in the normal range, well below 84.56 that it registered in January. Praise God!
April 21 through May 4 we were in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, attending the Leadership Matters Course (LMC). There were 30 participants and 10 trainers from 14 countries. This course teaches Christ-centered leadership skills from all angles: communication, management, motivation, creative thinking, decision-making, training others, public relations, and cultivating Biblical relationships. We studied the elements of Biblical Leadership—vision, communication, shepherding care, the necessity of life-long learning, the reality of pain in the life of the leader, and the importance of God’s anointing. Another highlight of the course was spending a Day of Solitude, seeking God’s direction in our lives and ministries.
We each gave a devotional and a 12-minute talk on our ministries. We also prepared and presented a workshop. Jim & I chose to present “How to Have a Good Argument” which got everyone’s attention! (We just used this workshop at the Indonesian C&MA’s Pastors’ Retreat in conjunction with presenting the Alliance Marriage Encounter {ALMA} program.)
We went a few days early to Phnom Penh and visited the Genocide Museum. Going there made a big impact on our hearts. The Museum originally was a high school, but during the Khmer Rouge Regime the classrooms were each divided into 6 tiny cells where people were tortured. We were shocked to learn that only seven of the estimated 17,000 prisoners lived.
In the 3+ years of the Khmer Rouge Regime 80% of the Church were executed. The Church is now growing. Some of the participants at LMC were Cambodians who had found Christ in refugee camps. One man said that the way they learned theology in the refugee camps was by putting Christian words to popular folk tunes. They have testified first hand that the blood of martyrs is the seed of the Church. Pray for our brothers and sisters in Cambodia.
Since our return to Indonesia, Jim has led several days of Field Leadership Team meetings. Then earlier this week we both attended the Indonesian C&MA’s Pastors’ Prayer Retreat in Bali. Rev. Steve Elliott from Lexington, Kentucky, was the special devotional speaker. We enjoyed his messages twice—once in English and then as they were translated into Indonesian! The committee gave us 1-1/2 hour slots on two days to present our workshop on “How to Argue Well” and then we shared that the material had come from ALMA follow-up sessions. We were so thankful for this opportunity! Now, pray that those who expressed interest in having ALMA Weekends in their areas will follow through! This week Jim will attend the yearly conference of the national church which will be in Kupang, Timur. Again, he will have opportunity to present ALMA.
I’ll close for now. We really do appreciate your prayers for our ministries here. God is answering!
Much love in Christ,
Jim & Sharon Kendall
Prayer Requests/Answers to Prayer
Pray for lasting fruit. There is a follow-up meeting scheduled for Saturday afternoon in our home in Bekasi, May 28th. This will be the fist of 10 monthly small-group meetings that will cover topics like family, our spouse, children, finances, sex, how to fight, and how to reconcile. These meetings will be the future leaders in ALMA ... these are the ones who last, who are growing, who are committed to family.
Pray for Timo (Tee-mo) and Glenda. We are developing them as ALMA presenters. They will be sitting in on the sessions in which we share. There are two or three other couples we want to encourage to join the ALMA presenter team.
Pray for Kalam Hidup and for the special team which has been appointed to rejuvenate Kalam Hidup. Pray that Kalam Hidup can restore its good reputation.
Pray for us Jim has s been re-elected as Field Director until our next home assignment in 2015.

Pray.
The Alliance believes wholeheartedly in the power and necessity of prayer. We cannot “Live the Call Together” unless prayer is central to all we do—in our denomination, in our churches, and in our individual lives.
