Prayer Letter/Ministry Update

We are privileged to serve the Lord in the city of Mendoza, a provincial capital of almost 1 million inhabitants on the western edge of Argentina. Together with our Argentine colleagues Jose Luis (Toto) and Jacky Arana, we are planting the first Alliance congregation in the entire province of Mendoza. The work has been slow and at times difficult, but God is at work, the church is growing, and lives are being transformed.

It was recently announced that International Ministries of the C&MA plans to withdraw all missionaries from Argentina as well as five other fields in Latin America within the next few years. This decision comes at least in part as a response to the world economic crisis and resulting budget constraints. There is a move toward redeploying limited resources away from older mission fields in places like Latin America toward emerging mission fields in other parts of the world. Closure in Argentina is scheduled for 2014. In the meantime, we are committed to doing all we can to establish the church on a firm footing in Mendoza and other cities where our missionaries are working. Since the church-planting project where we are working is one of the newest, we will likely be among the last missionaries to leave the field. Others may be transitioning earlier as the projects they are working with come to a close.

It was just 5 years ago that we left Peru when that field was closed and transitioned to ministry here in Argentina. Frankly, it is difficult to face the prospect of doing it all again. We ask for your prayers for us and our colleagues during this time of transition. We do not know what the next step will be after we leave Argentina, but we are all trusting the Lord to direct our lives.

Prayer Requests/Answers to Prayer

Prayer
• Pray for daily health and strength and freedom from discouragement and fatigue.
• Pray for our colleague Jacky Arana, who is experiencing severe pain in her knees and other joints and may need an operation.
• Pray for the spiritual growth of those who recently accepted the Lord. Pray that they will remain committed and will grow in their understanding of what it means to be a follower of Christ.
• Pray that the Lord would provide the remaining funds that are needed to purchase a building as a permanent home for the Mendoza Alliance church. Over $50,000 is needed.
• Pray for us and the rest of our colleagues on the Argentine field as we seek the Lord´s direction for future ministry after the closing of the field.
• A new president of the Argentine Alliance was elected at the annual national church convention. Pray for pastor Felix Jimenez as he takes on this new challenge. Pray that he would be a godly and Spirit-filled leader.
