“Lord, teach us to pray.” That was a request of Jesus’ followers on one occasion (Luke 11:1). Some of you will remember what it was like learning to pray. I (Dan) don’t. Since prayer was a part of the home in which I grew up. I learned how to do it just as I did many other things like brushing my teeth after eating. I don’t remember “learning” either activity. It is just something I’ve always done.
I do remember learning to pray in Spanish. At first, I didn’t know the vocabulary. I didn’t know the grammar. I didn’t know how to form questions or how to express deep feelings and desires. I didn’t even know what form of the personal pronoun “you” to use when addressing God. It all just seemed so foreign to me. When praying in Spanish God felt so far away – I couldn’t communicate my heart to him. Could you imagine living without praying?
Recently Melody and I have had two people cross our path that find prayer to be “foreign” to them. It’s awkward. It is something they have never done before. They have to be taught. They don’t know the terminology. They don’t know the grammar, and most of all they don’t know the God to whom we pray!
Ricardo, (not his real name) stayed after our Sunday night Bible study. He wanted to talk about spiritual matters. God is at work in his life. He stated in a matter of fact way that six months ago he wouldn’t have been willing to even participate in such a conversation. In the course of the conversation I asked him, “Have you ever prayed?” His response left me cold, “I don’t remember ever praying.” So I probed a bit further, “You mean that in a moment when you were afraid or when you found yourself in a difficult situation you never whispered a prayer to the God who might be there?” “Yes, that’s right”, he confirmed.
A lady for whom some of you are praying telephoned Melody. She barely paused to catch her breath as she unburdened her heavy heart. Melody let Maria (not her real name) know that she could call anytime and share her concerns and that more importantly she could share her burdens with Jesus at any time in prayer (Matt. 11:28-31). “Now how do I do that (pray)?” she asked. So Melody explained how all she had to do was “talk” to God. Her next question was, “And what should I call him?”
It is so easy for those of us who grew up praying or who have been praying for many years to take it for granted, so much so, we don’t do it enough. Perhaps some of you feel like you wish you could do more than pray for people like Ricardo and Maria. The fact is, there is NOTHING you can do that is more important!
Greetings to all from beautiful Buenos Aires!
February 27, 2009
The highlights of each week for us are the Bible studies we hold in homes. These are times when we grow and see others grow in understanding of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. As we teach we trust the Holy Spirit will take the Word and do the humanly impossible task of making Jesus and his teaching real and relevant to those who attend.
The conversation usually is lively with a great deal of participation. Porteņos, as the inhabitants of Buenos Aires are known, are very expressive. Just imagine interacting with a room full of Italians and you will have an idea of the group dynamics. It isn't unusual for two or three people to talk at once - and the amazing thing about it is - Porteņos can follow all three!
This past Sunday wasn't perhaps as lively as some - but a husband and wife who actively participate in the discussion made a couple of statements that stuck in our minds. At one point Rosa, (not her real name) looked around the room and said to the rest of the group, "Thank you for being patient with me. I don't know if I ever would have come to Christ if you would have hurried me up."
Later in the discussion Rosa's husband, Guillermo, expressed his burning desire that his brother come to Christ. He exclaimed with Argentine enthusiasm, "Every time I see him I want to beat him over the head with the Gospel!"
These two comments illustrate the internal battle we often face with those we desire to come to Christ. We want to move things along faster but so many of our friends are slow to make the commitment. Pray that our zeal will never cool and our patience will outlast all the arguments raised against our Lord by people we love dearly.
Thanks for walking alongside us.

God has been working here as we meet with different unbelieving friends and make contact with them again after being on home assignment for six months. We would appreciate so much if you would help us pray for one particular woman.
Recently we invited one of our acquaintances over for coffee. (We'll call her Maria) She owns a large property that we have rented for many of our seminars and activities. She had hip surgery back in May of last year. We visited her at the hospital when that took place and later Melody visited her in her home. She attended one of Melody's seminars and later came to one of the special talks the Bible study groups had at her facility. Our coffee time with her was a divine appointment because she began to tell us that she was searching for a path to real peace and told us all the places and things (astrology, yoga, devotion to saints etc.) she is pursuing to find it. Our hearts ache for her since she is 70 years old and still doesn't know what she believes and has no peace. She asked us how is it that we have peace....what do we do to get it? It was a wide open door and we began to talk to her about Jesus and how He is the WAY the TRUTH and the LIFE. It was beautiful! She listened and asked questions and was so attentive. We asked her if she had a Bible and if she had ever read one. She said she hadn't ever read the Bible and wasn't sure she had one. She thinks she may have brought a little Bible home from the hospital and wants to check to see if that is what it is. She seemed very interested and wants to get a hold of one to read it. We told her we could help by reading it with her if she wanted to.....she indicated she wants to do that and will be calling us to make arrangements to so so. We will get her a Bible for sure.
Please pray for her that God will continue to speak to her heart. We sensed His presence so much in our time with her and that the Spirit of God was there speaking to her. We know the devil will do everything possible to keep her from coming to God, so please be praying that God's powerful LOVE, will draw her to Himself.
We appreciate your prayers so much.

Praise! We thank God for...
1. ... a great 6 month home assignment. The Bloomingdale (IL) Church family blessed us in so many ways it would be impossible to list them all. Most of all they provided a welcoming environment for two transient international workers in need of that!
2. ... new friends made during tour ministries in the Central District (eastern Ohio). The prayer and financial support of these faithful Christ followers makes our ministry and those of hundreds of other C&MA international workers possible.
3. ...arriving at the Ezeiza airport in Buenos Aires on December 31 safe and sound. We went through customs without any problems and celebrated the new year with dear friends.
4. ...for the good leadership that our Argentine colleague, Eduardo Malve gave to the BAPP (Buenos Aires Professional Project) in our absence. Significant numerical and spiritual growth has taken place over the past six month.
Pray for...
1. ...effective follow up of the more than 140 families touched in a significant way by BAPP team members and ministries over the past year. Pray that many of these will become devoted followers of Jesus Christ and integrated into communities of faith.
2. ...Christ to permeate our lives and ministries so that he can accomplish all that He wants to do in and through us.
3. ...God's financial provision for all He wants to do through BAPP and other ministries supported by the Great Commission Fund of the C&MA.
Gratefully,

November 2008
Home assignment has been a great time for the two of us. It began July 1 and will soon be coming to a close. We have enjoyed the quality time we have had with family. The apartment provided by the Bloomingdale (IL) Church has been ideal as has the fellowship in this community of faith.
BAPP ministry has continued here in the USA as well as in Argentina during home assignment. In July we were able to attend training at the Muncie (IN) Alliance Church. The training was to prepare us to operate a coffee house. We’re praying and testing the waters to see if this might be a way for BAPP to have a face in our un-churched community. A coffee shop might be a good way to make contact seven days a week and provide a stable location where we can continue our regular outreach ministries.
From Sept 12 through Nov 10 we visited 19 churches in eastern Ohio. We lost track of how many times we spoke during those 57 days. In many ways those days seem like a blur, but there are experiences and people that have marked our lives. Our desire was to leave a bit of the love we have for our Savior, Argentina and Argentines in each of congregations we visited. Thanks to each of the churches and families who shared a meal with us or opened their homes for us to stay. Thanks to each individual and church that faithfully support the BAPP ministry and the ministries of all C&MA missionaries in more than 50 other countries around the world through giving to the Great Commission Fund.
After spending the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays with our families here in the States, we’ll be returning to Buenos Aires on December 30.
May your holiday season be filled with His holy presence!
