Prayer Letter/Ministry Update

Overview of who Deborah Walker is and what she has been doing at Bongolo Hospital for the past 20 years:

I have been minstering with the C&MA since May 1988, primarily as the Pediatrician at Bongolo Hospital, a 120-bed facility in Gabon, Africa. Other responsibilities have included the adult medicine department, the premature infant ward (about 50 preemies/year), the maternity ward, medicine ordering for the hospital, continuing education for our Gabonese nurses, teaching Theological Education by Extension (TEE) and helping, as part of the Bongolo team, to plant local churches in villages around Bongolo.

Update (January 18, 2009)

As many of you know, last year we were able to send a 3 year old girl named Binta to Mayo Clinic for heart surgery. In December we had a one-week visit from Dr. Johannsen, the cardiologist from MN who has been coming to Bongolo for many years, and a Christian echo-cardiographer who I met at Mayo Clinic when I was there in 2006. During that one week we made video echocardiograms of all the children with heart defects that I am following. Mayo Clinic is currently reviewing them and if and when another charity slot becomes available I’m praying that they will accept another child from our hospital for heart surgery. Over the past 10 years we have been able to send three children to the States for heart surgery. We saw all three last month and they are all doing very well.

God continues to draw people to Himself here at Bongolo Hospital as He heals body, soul and spirit.
The other day, as I made rounds in the Pediatric ward, I sensed that one of the mothers was at the end of her rope and was searching for some real answers. Even though her child was doing better, physically, she was overwhelmed with fear and anxiety, a legacy from her animistic (spirit worship) background. After explaining to her how Christ came to Earth and died for her sins and that she could have complete forgiveness, peace and eternal life, I asked if she was willing for our hospital Chaplain to come and explain the Gospel further and pray with her in her own language. I wanted to be sure that she understood the Gospel and that she wasn’t accepting the Lord just to please the Doctor or so that her child would get better. An hour later, Pastor Pascal joyfully reported to me that she and her mother had prayed to accept Jesus as their Savior. It was immediately obvious that peace had replaced fear and despair. We are here at Bongolo to meet people’s physical needs but even more importantly we introduce them to the One who can meet all their needs.

Thank you for your continued prayer support and for your giving to the Great Commission fund that has allowed me to minister here at Bongolo Hospital for the past 20 years.

Deborah A. Walker, M.D.

Prayer Requests/Answers to Prayer

Please pray that Mayo Clinic will be able to offer us another charity slot and that the Lord will provide all the funds needed for the airfare for the patient and one parent.
(funds may be given to the Approved Special: #47200 Bongolo Heart Send Project)

Please continue to pray for permission from the Gabonese Government for us to be allowed to purchase Anti-Retroviral medications and start treating the many patients with AIDS that we see each week.

Please continue to pray for our "Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV" program , that it would touch many women and their babies, both physically and spiritually

Pray.

The Alliance believes wholeheartedly in the power and necessity of prayer. We cannot “Live the Call Together” unless prayer is central to all we do—as a denomination, as churches, and as individuals.

Give.

You can help build Christ’s Church around the world by donating online to the Great Commission Fund. This fund finances our missionaries, allowing them to focus on ministry rather than raising their own support.

Serve.
