Expert Care and Love

Children’s doctor gained skills and virtues at TFC

Dr. Steven Smith serves as a complex care pediatrician at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in Ohio. A 2008 alumnus of Toccoa Falls College (TFC), he was a Biology major who is now making a significant contribution to his field.

When Steven talks about his formative undergraduate experience at TFC, he emphasizes how the college invested in both his individual career and his faith.

Dr. Steven Smith
“I received the knowledge needed to succeed in medicine while also being grounded in truth. My time there increased my sense of compassion and empathy while further developing how I approach the world from a theological standpoint. This foundation is invaluable to my medical career and has helped solidify my drive to support and guide families through challenging times. TFC was instrumental in shaping the person and doctor that I am today. I found an interest in ethics, theology, and philosophy, concepts that give me strength and foundation as a doctor.”

One TFC professor who was influential in shaping Steven’s training was Dr. Kieran Clements.

“His passion for biology and the exploration of how the world works was undeniable. I recall especially the higher-level biology courses being instrumental and his approach to teaching igniting my curiosity. During my time at TFC he was a great mentor, and I appreciated his wisdom and input in my career. Ironically, Dr. Clements actually led my orientation group, so he truly got to witness me develop from an insecure freshman to a more confident senior about to embark on medical school.”

Building a Career

Steven completed a fellowship in Pediatric Palliative Care and Hospice, a new and developing field in the care of long-term illnesses. At Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, he is excited to be in a dynamic atmosphere, finding personal fulfillment and passion working in challenging situations where both expert care and love are needed.

“Within my residency, I have worked and collaborated with my mentors to help further develop this field of medicine. My current focus has been largely on helping ease the transition from hospital to home for families with children who have complex medical needs. I have also worked toward increasing resident awareness and educational opportunities with this population of amazing children. I am still in the early phase of my career but am very excited about the prospect of helping families and children with special needs as well as those with terminal medical conditions.”

Reflecting on his career and its future, Steven says, “I am humbled and blessed to provide care in a compassionate way. I am blessed to have the opportunities that I have had since graduating from TFC, and I am thankful for the skills and virtues TFC helped develop in me.”
