General Information:

World Factbook—Gabon

The living situation includes a mission station where both the hospital and about 20 housing units are located. The hospital is about 0.5-1 kilometers from each housing unit. All expat personnel live on the mission station, along with PAACS (www.paacs.net) residents and other upper-level hospital administrative and medical staff. Bongolo Hospital is a 158-bed hospital performing 1600 surgical procedures and an additional 600 ophthalmologic procedures per year. Over 40,000 outpatients are seen annually. Over 1,000 people per year make a profession of faith in Christ through the ministries of Bongolo Hospital. The mission station is located about five kilometers from a town of 5,000 people where there is a fuel station, a market, multiple shops, and one chain store (convenience store size). For the most part food can be purchased locally. A vehicle isn’t a requirement but suggested for ease of shopping and ministry activities outside the station.

Language Expectations:

Language is an essential part of ministry. IWs will receive one year of intensive French language study in a French-speaking environment. The goal will be to speak, read, and write the language at a functional level, in order to share the good news of Jesus. While speaking French is adequate to work and live in Gabon, it’s also beneficial to learn at least greetings in the most common tribal languages, which can be done in-country.

Health Considerations:

Gabon is a relatively hot and humid country. Being in good health is important, but chronic diseases such as diabetes or hypertension are acceptable, if they are under control. Bongolo Hospital has a number of capable physicians and a well-stocked pharmacy. Chronic diseases should be managed by a US-based physician and not by a physician on the mission field.

Expectations for Spouse:

Spousal roles vary based on the spouse’s gifts, training, and abilities, as well as the needs of the team. It is expected that both spouses will be meaningfully involved in meeting ministry objectives, depending on the nature of family roles, children’s needs, etc. Possible areas of service include administration, member care, finance, housing, and IT.

Children’s Educational Plan and Options:

Homeschooling is often preferred, but children can attend the French schools in the area. There sometimes has been a teacher present at Bongolo Hospital to help with homeschooling, and this could be an option for the future, based on the needs and desires of team members. Boarding school options are also a viable option.

Compensation

The successful applicant(s) will receive a full compensation package with the expectation that, once appointed, efforts will be made to raise a portion of support costs through the applicant’s network of friends and family, local church, or other resources. Information on support costs will be made available upon application. Training and/or coaching in fund-raising is available.

Whole-Life Health

The C&MA is an evangelical denomination committed to planting churches both in the United States and internationally. Due to the nature of this ministry opportunity, part of the required qualifications include optimal emotional, spiritual, and physical health. These are assessed during the application process.

Important Clarification:

Applicants should be aware that serving in the international world often requires a higher degree of grace and flexibility. For example, overseas teams can be suddenly and unexpectedly impacted by illness, government decisions, financial realities, team changes, or other factors beyond the team’s control. The challenge for applicants is that these factors can sometimes necessitate the sudden redefining of a position, which may take place before, during, or after the application/interview process.
