  • International worker (IW)—clergy track
  • Church planting, leadership development, evangelism, discipleship
  • Partially funded (requested to raise partial support)

This team ministers in a country of 10 million people where evangelicals comprise less than one percent. The Alliance has targeted northern Portugal, where the population is most dense and the people are least reached. This church is the only evangelical presence in Paredes, a city of 20,000. The successful applicant(s) will be a part of reaching this dark region with the gospel.

  • Disciple new believers one-on-one and in groups
  • Develop relationships with local people
  • Integrate into the church-planting team and participate in team activities
  • Lead worship and preach

Required Qualifications:

  • A recognized bachelor’s degree
  • Completion of at least 30 hours of Bible/theology/ministry and 15 hours of intercultural studies
    • Note: The spouse must hold a recognized bachelor’s degree, have strong ministry experience, and have completed the C&MA Polity course and at least 18 hours of Bible/theology and 15 hours of missions/ministry studies (with a minimum of 6 hours in cross-cultural or missions studies).
  • A minimum of two years of successful Alliance Licensed Ministry Experience

  • A minimum Modern Language Aptitude Test (MLAT) score of 35
  • Willingness to be a team player on a multi-cultural team
  • A collaborative and supportive posture toward the team’s established philosophy of ministry
  • Creativity in developing a platform for ministry to engage and impact the community surrounding the church plant

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Vocal and instrumental (piano/keyboard and/or guitar) ability; willingness to provide musical instruction as needed
  • Relational skills; ability and willingness to engage in conversations in the local language
  • Some experience as a participant and/or coach in sports-related ministries; (e.g. American football, cycling)

Biblical Characteristics Desired:

  • Kingdom minded
  • Biblically grounded
  • Spirit dependent
  • Competently skilled
  • Self-aware
  • Self-disciplined

Timeline for Deployment:

Summer/fall of 2021. All appointees are required to attend a cross-cultural and language-acquisition program and Pre-Field Orientation prior to deploying.

General Information:

This team works in a small town with a small-town culture. The successful applicant(s) will encounter people they have met or know on a daily basis as they go about their lives. Supermarkets, meat markets, banks, and post offices are all readily available and most are within walking distance. Several shopping malls are within a 20-30 minute drive. Public transportation (taxi, train, bus) is easily accessible. Few homes have heat or air conditioning, so the winters can feel cold—even inside. Summers can be quite warm with temperatures in the 90s.

Language Expectations:

Language is an essential part of ministry. IWs receive two years of intensive language and cultural study. The goal will be to speak, read, and write the language at a functional level in order to mentor, teach, and train others.

Health Considerations:

Portugal has a socialized medical system. However, private health care (doctors, hospitals, clinics, etc) is excellent, and health needs should be adequately cared for. The price of private health care is very reasonable and within the limits of the Alliance health plan.

Expectations for Spouse:

Spousal roles vary based on the spouse’s gifts, training, and abilities, as well as the needs of the team. It is expected that both spouses will be meaningfully involved in meeting ministry objectives, depending on the nature of family roles, children’s needs, etc.

Children’s Educational Plan and Options:

Public education is available in Portuguese. There are some private schools that are of a higher educational quality, with some offering a portion of the curriculum in English. Homeschooling is an option, although the Portuguese government requires that at least one parent have a degree in education. High-school students have the option of studying and boarding at Black Forest Academy in Kandern, Germany, which is relatively easy and inexpensive to travel to.

The successful applicant(s) will receive a full compensation package with the expectation that, once appointed, efforts will be made to raise a portion of support costs through the applicant’s network of friends and family, local church, or other resources. Information on support costs will be made available upon application. Training and/or coaching in fund-raising is available.

Whole-Life Health

The C&MA is an evangelical denomination committed to planting churches both in the United States and internationally. Due to the nature of this ministry opportunity, part of the required qualifications include optimal emotional, spiritual, and physical health. These are assessed during the application process.

Important Clarification:

Applicants should be aware that serving in the international world often requires a higher degree of grace and flexibility. For example, overseas teams can be suddenly and unexpectedly impacted by illness, government decisions, financial realities, team changes, or other factors beyond the team’s control. The challenge for applicants is that these factors can sometimes necessitate the sudden redefining of a position, which may take place before, during, or after the application/interview process.
