Yellow Fever Outbreak in Paraguay

Seven people have died from an outbreak of yellow fever in Paraguay, and authorities are mounting a massive vaccination campaign in high-risk areas. “No one from any of our churches has been hit with yellow fever yet as far as we know,” said Alliance missionary Brenda Boston. “As of today, the country will run out of vaccines; there were less than 1 million vaccines for more than 6 million people. People have been waiting in long lines, and fights have broken out as they try to get vaccinated.” A member of the San Lorenzo church, who has connections with the public health department, has been helping people from the church to get vaccinated.

According to USA Today, this is Paraguay’s first yellow fever outbreak in 34 years. Vaccines are being flown in from Brazil and Peru. The World Health Organization states that an estimated 30,000 people worldwide die annually from the disease. Symptoms can include fevers, vomiting, jaundice, and bleeding (The Associated Press).
