Signs of His Coming

By Andrew Schaeffer,
Missionary to Burkina Faso (on home assignment)

In Burkina Faso we always know when a dignitary is coming to town:

* Streets are swept clean
* Curbs and tree trunks are painted white
* Flags and banners wave in the breeze
* A podium and rows of chairs are neatly arranged
* Crowds are milling about impatiently

These are the signs that precede his arrival.

There were also signs that announced Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, including a very large crowd. During that first Passion Week Jesus’ disciples asked Him: “What will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” Jesus gave them several signs to look for:

* False Christs
* Wars and rumors of wars
* Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom
* Famines
* Earthquakes in various places (Matt 24:4-8)

The recent tensions in the Middle East and the earthquakes in Haiti and Chile are sober reminders to us that the end of the age is near. But they also remind us that our risen Savior will return soon. Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!

As we commemorate Jesus’ death and resurrection this week, let us “live holy and godly lives as we look forward to the day of God and speed its coming” (2 Peter 3:11-12).

Rejoicing in His resurrection, anticipating His return!
