Veterinarians Open Doors for Ministry in Mali

By Shawn McCabe, serving in Mali

bramaShawn and Rebekah McCabe serve in Mali with Compassion and Mercy Associates (CAMA), the relief and development arm of The Alliance. The following is an adaptation of Shawn’s recent update about a short-term missions team that experienced a grand adventure vaccinating animals.

A recent veterinarian work trip here was not for the weak or faint of heart. For most of the team, this was their first time to set foot on African soil. It will be an adventure they will not easily forget-cows kicking, horns flying, donkeys biting, and washed out roads that even a 4×4 could not manage.

We were concerned that there would not be a good turnout. But thanks to the collaboration between Christ Community Church, Omaha, Nebraska, CAMA, and the local Alliance church in the district of Koutiala, 5,600 animals were vaccinated against parasites in the village of N’golonianasso over the course of four days. What an answer to prayer!

The team partnered with George Gouita, an Alliance pastor from N’golonianasso, who was a vital part of the ministry. While the vets focused on vaccinating the cows, Pastor George talked, one-on-one, with villagers about why a group of American’s would come half way around the world to care for their cows. Evangelistic services were held on two evenings. More than 500 people heard the message of salvation, and three young men decided to follow Jesus. Praise the Lord!

There is no doubt in my mind that seeds have been planted, and soon there will be a spiritual harvest in the village of N’golonianasso. Special thanks to Jerry Busselman and his team. I was amazed at their flexibility, amazing attitudes, and work ethic-these guys gave 100 percent.

N’golonianasso’s mayor has given us a letter, inviting the team to come again. Plans are in the works for a second vet team to visit other villages in this area next year.
