Great Commission Fund Saving Malian Orphans’ Lives

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Medical workers at the Koutiala Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Mali, one of the poorest countries in the world, report that the Great Commission Fund (GCF), the central funding vehicle for The Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA), is saving babies’ lives.

In the land-locked West African nation of Mali, where the average income is less than $2 a day, women and children face staggering barriers to survival. About one in fifteen Malian women die in childbirth; one in four children never reaches the age of five.

A number of babies whose mothers have died—mostly from childbirth complications arising from a lack of medical assistance—are brought to the Alliance-supported Koutiala Hospital in southeastern Mali, says hospital pediatrician Brett MacLean. “Families typically keep the babies, but feeding them is very difficult. Since formula is too expensive, these babies often die. We’re able to provide them nutrition because of donations to the Great Commission Fund, which allows us to be God’s hands to care for these orphans.”

The Koutiala Women’s and Children’s Hospital opened in May 2006 on an eight-acre campus outside the city of Koutiala to provide full maternity services to the city and surrounding areas. As of October 2010, some 6,500 babies had been born at the hospital; it is the first Christian hospital in Mali, which is about twice the size of the state of Texas.

The Christian and Missionary Alliance is a worldwide family of Christians mobilized to fulfill the Great Commission by living out the fullness of Jesus Christ in personal experience and building His Church worldwide. Today, there are more than 2,000 Alliance churches in the United States and more than 20,000 fellowships in 81 countries around the world. Nearly 5 million Christians call themselves “Alliance,” united by an unquenchable passion to reach our communities for Christ and provide access to the gospel where no access yet exists.
