Relief Teams Mobilize for Superstorm Sandy

The following updates have been supplied as of Monday, November 5, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. EST

Metro District Disaster Relief Team

The Metropolitan District has formed a Disaster Relief Team, led by Paul Kaiser; Paul served in the Coast Guard and the New Jersey State Police and helped coordinate the relief efforts for 9/11 in New York City.

The team has established six relief centers in Alliance churches on the frontline of the affected areas:

  • Centerpoint Church in Long Island, N.Y.
  • New Hope Community Church in Staten Island, N.Y.
  • Building on the Rock Church in Manchester Township, N.J. (near Seaside Heights)
  • King of Kings Community Church in Manahawkin, N.J.
  • Lighthouse Alliance Church in Tuckerton, N.J.
  • Trinity Alliance Church in Egg Harbor City, N.J. (near Atlantic City)

These relief centers will serve as collection and distribution points for supplies, food, and material, as well as staging areas for work teams. Already these churches are serving their communities and displaced people in collaboration with local governments, churches, and other relief organizations. The relief site at Tuckerton is also a command center for Operation Blessing and the Manahawkin site is the command center for Christ in Action.

The Alliance family around the nation has begun to mobilize. Supplies and donations have come in from Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. We are encouraged by the response, but we recognize that this is only the beginning of a long recovery and healing process.

This is our first line of district-wide relief coordination. We encourage those who want to help to go to www.metrocmarelief.org.

Eastern Pennsylvania District

The Eastern Pennsylvania District of the C&MA is mobilizing its churches to offer assistance to affected churches and individuals from the neighboring Metropolitan District, and Eastern Pennsylvania churches have been invited to take a special offering for relief efforts.

Andy Beare, lead pastor at the Greenview Alliance Church in Montoursville, Pa., is helping to coordinate these efforts. He writes, “Friends, our neighboring district is hurting and is asking for our help. This is an easy way to quickly make a big impact. Later, teams will be needed to help in the cleanup and rebuilding effort and there will be ample opportunities for hands on help. Now, however, I am asking you and your church to help meet the most immediate, significant needs.”
