Prayer: The Alliance Priority
Prayer has been a part of our Alliance DNA since its earliest days. Convinced that prayer is a necessary work for deeper intimacy with our Heavenly Father, Alliance founder A. B. Simpson established prayer as a priority within The Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA).
He challenged the sons and daughters of God to pray with audacious boldness for “the highest possibilities of God’s Word.” And in 1890, Simpson proposed forming a Prayer Alliance to intercede “for the evangelization of the world…”
He knew that pressing into God through prayer is essential to our movement’s calling to fulfill the Great Commission.
More than a Slogan
Prayer is the primary work of God’s people (see Philippians 4:6–7) is a Core Value of the C&MA, and we encourage our churches to intercede for others.

As our greater Alliance family is present in more than 80 nations, the relationships we develop through ministry are based on our relationship to God through prayer. He continues to perform the miraculous through the prayerful partnership of His people.
- In answer to the intercessions of international workers who are transitioning out of Brazil, lay leaders are being raised up in a church plant whose small groups are characterized by prayer.
- Recently in Indonesia, prayer led to the healing of a new believer who suddenly became lame due to spiritual oppression.
- As our worldwide Alliance family has interceded on behalf of war-torn Mali, amazing reports are coming in about God’s faithfulness to sustain and protect His people.
- In the North and Central Asia region, one of the last missions frontiers, fervent prayer is softening hearts to accept the Savior.
But our work is not done.
“We must faithfully storm the throne on behalf of those who are lost in darkness or sick or discouraged or preparing for or involved in ministry both here in the United States and around the world,” wrote Dennis Whalen, vice president for Development at the U.S. C&MA National Office, in Alliance Life magazine.
“Living the Call together is more than a slogan.”
