One night, I was sitting on my bed when the quiet was interrupted by gun shots. I heard about 20 rounds. I grabbed my phone from the shelf above my bed, crouched down, and rushed into the room where my son was sleeping.
A couple months back, a stray bullet had pierced our bedroom wall and landed near my side of the bed. Fortunately, we weren’t in the house at that time. Now, my mind was entertaining thoughts of more bullets flying through the wall or window.
My heart was pounding. I knelt down beside my little sleeping boy and, with shaking hands, called my husband, who was away. There was no answer. I tried again and again.
Never Forsaken
My thoughts reminded me that he could do nothing anyway. At that moment, I felt such shame for not calling on God first. My heavenly Father was with me, He felt my beating heart, He saw my little boy—and He wasn’t going to leave us.
After a few moments, the night was calm again. I walked back to my room, crawled into bed, pulled the covers up to my chin, and started to recite Psalm 91. “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest . . .” I don’t know how far I got, but several hours later, I woke up to a new morning. Thank You, sweet Father, for Your rest!
The following night, robbers broke the lock off of our chicken coop and stole two hens. Our helper rounded up the rest of the chickens roaming the yard the next morning. Heavy hearted, he shared the news of the theft.
We ask you to pray that God will keep us safe from the “friendly fire” that often is heard in our town. Pray for a hedge of protection around our property and our family. Also, praise God for His sheltering wings.
