Earthquake in Chile

Alliance workers are safe after an 8.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Chile on the night of April 1, 2014, killing six people. More than 900,000 residents were evacuated when a tsunami warning was issued; it has since been lifted.

“We are hundreds of miles south and not in any danger,” write Bob and Cheryl Fugate, Alliance global staffers in Santiago, Chile. “We do not have reports of damage or loss of life, but we have Alliance churches in the two major cities on the coast that are affected. These have been evacuated in preparation for a possible tsunami. Our colleague, Ruth Shover, who lives about 250 miles south of the epicenter, is safe and does not have to evacuate her house.”

Dozens of follow-up tremors have been reported, including some of 6- and 7- magnitude. Some people are without electricity or water, and 300 prisoners escaped from the federal jail in Iquique. Also, several main highways are blocked due to landslides.

Please pray for all who have been affected. We will continue to be in contact with Alliance global staff in the region.
