Finding Hope in Jesus

Soriya and her husband have had AIDS since 2006. “When I found out I had it, I was so upset,” she said. “I thought this was a disease that society regarded with hatred and prejudice.” She was especially fearful her 12-year-old son would become an orphan.

AIDS volunteers with the CAMA team pause for prayer.

Soriya’s sister told her about the AIDS home care team, a joint project of Compassion and Mercy Associates (CAMA) and the Khmer Evangelical Church (the Alliance national in Cambodia). Team members visited Soriya, providing medicated soap and moringa powder, a highly nutritious source of protein, vitamins, and minerals.

“I am happy [they took care of me],” Soriya reported. “Since then, I have energy and feel strong and healthy. They encouraged me to trust, believe, and hope in Jesus.”

Later, when Soriya developed a gallstone, “God did a miracle in my life,” she said. The CAMA AIDS coordinator arranged for Soriya to visit a medical clinic in Phnom Penh.

“I prayed to God to take out the stone,” she said. “I trusted Him and asked Him to save my life, because I have a small child.”

A doctor told Soriya that because of her low blood cell count and weak heart, she was not a candidate for surgery. He gave her medicine to increase her blood cells and told her to return in four months.

“I prayed [throughout that time],” Soriya said. “By faith, I hoped God would help me.”

On the day Soriya was scheduled for surgery, the doctor did another ultrasound, which revealed that the stone was gone.

“There was no need to do surgery!” Soriya exclaimed. “I was so happy. Thank God, the only true Lord, who did this miracle to save my life for my family!”

―This article was based on Soriya’s testimony, as told to Mi Rebok, an Alliance international worker who serves in Cambodia with her husband, David.
