“Heart Café” Deepens Connections with Tsunami Survivors

Earlier this summer, the New Life Center (NLC), an Alliance outreach in Ishinomaki, Japan, hosted the “Heart Café”—a coffee time to deepen connections with recent anxiety workshop attendees.

The New Life Center offers trauma counseling to people affected by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
“Despite pouring rain and difficult circumstances in their personal lives, several people came for coffee and Christian counseling,” said Jill and Alan Kropp, Alliance international workers and NLC team leaders. The newest NLC team member, Nobue—a U.S. trained and certified counselor—facilitated conversation.

“Nobue was encouraged by the openness with which our new friends expressed their struggles,” the Kropps observed. “She explained how Jesus’ power can touch emotional and physical needs.” Also, Nobue had the opportunity to pray privately with one woman, who asked for His healing touch on her body.

“We desire to see this small beginning in heart-care ministry become the seed of a much larger work,” the Kropps added. Through this and other initiatives, the NLC team hopes to facilitate the formation of small groups that will meet regularly and offer a Christian perspective, addressing specific heart-level needs, such as the anxiety and hopelessness many area residents have experienced since the 2011 tsunami.

“In the context of these ongoing relationships, we hope to lead people to believe in and follow Christ, finding Him to be the all-sufficient One,” said the Kropps.

Pray

“Pray that God will give Nobue wisdom as she continues to develop the Heart Café and other NLC heart-care ministries,” the Kropps requested. “Please pray that God’s Spirit will draw humble, broken people to participate in these ministries and that they will find healing and salvation in Christ.”
