Based on an report by Bob and Cheryl Fugate for the December 2010 issue of Alliance Life
On October 13, 2010, after 69 days underground, 33 miners trapped in the San José mine in Copiapo, Chile, were rescued before a worldwide audience. This Friday, The 33, a dramatization of the rescue mission starring Antonio Banderas, will hit U.S. theatres.
An Alliance Connection
Chilean Alliance Pastor Antonio Carcamo was one of five area clergy selected to join the pastoral care team for the rescue effort. He was on call and in constant contact with the regional governor during the crisis. Bibles were among the supplies the men requested. Pastor Antonio says that the miners held Bible studies and services twice a day during their ordeal.
One of the helicopters transferring the miners to the hospital was piloted by Lt. Isaac Espinoza, the pilot for Chile’s president. He also is a member of Church of the Vineyard, the Alliance congregation in Santiago.
“What amazed all of Chile was the revelation that the miners were arguing over who should be last to the surface,” said Bob and Cheryl Fugate, Alliance international workers who served in Chile during the miners’ ordeal. “None of them wanted to abandon their friends.”
