Nyack College/ATS to Transfer All Programs to NYC Campus

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo — Nyack College/Alliance Theological Seminary (ATS) announced today it has applied to the State of New York to operate solely from its campus in Lower Manhattan effective fall 2019. When the state approves the application, all Rockland County campus academic programs of the college and seminary will transition to the campus at 2 Washington Street in lower Manhattan.

“Nyack College is undergoing one of the most exciting changes in all of its history,” said Nyack/ATS President Mike Scales. “Repositioning campuses to be based in one major, urban area will establish Nyack as a truly unique Christian institution. This move will minimize rising costs and maintain high academic standards for our students.”

“We have been transparent about challenges we have encountered in recent years. We now see that circumstances beyond our control have opened a door allowing us to do something truly historic. We have the opportunity to take Nyack College back to its roots. The place where The Alliance was birthed to change the world remains the center of world influence.  It is fitting and strategic that Nyack College and ATS will return its operations to this place.”

Nyack College/ATS is taking the appropriate steps for all operations to return to New York City, where the college was founded, for the following reasons:

  • New York City positions Nyack/ATS missionally: Nyack’s mission is to prepare men and women to take the whole gospel to the whole world. While the twenty-first century is characterized by globalization and urbanization, few Christian colleges exist in U.S. urban centers. Nyack and ATS are reasserting their commitment to go where the need is greatest.
  • New York City positions Nyack/ATS relationally: Academic excellence requires partnerships, which are crucial to identifying and recruiting students and to providing field-based learning experiences. Creating strategic alliances in the New York City community vastly expands opportunities for Nyack and ATS students to have internships and hands-on experiences not available anywhere else.
  • New York City positions Nyack/ATS strategically: Christian and Missionary Alliance (C&MA) and Nyack College founder A. B. Simpson, envisioned taking the life-transforming, socially relevant gospel of Jesus to the ends of the earth. To fulfill this vision, Nyack/ATS alumni enter a broad spectrum of cross-cultural “worlds,” including business, ministry, education, social services, and the arts. Nowhere do these worlds converge as they do in New York City.
  • New York City positions Nyack/ATS economically. To continue to provide affordable and transformative Christian higher education to its students, Nyack and ATS must reduce their operational footprints and redesign their business models. Returning to New York City is an important part of this process.

Although many will view the move away from the Nyack campus with sadness, Nyack’s administration believes the decision to relocate the campus will present unprecedented opportunities for students to enhance their educational experience in a truly urban context.

Nyack’s leaders wish to assure its students, faculty, staff, and alumni that the institution remains fully committed to equipping its graduates spiritually, academically, and experientially to fulfill its mission of preparing men and women to take the whole Gospel to the whole world.
