Another strong quake shook Puerto Rico on Saturday, January 11—less than one week after the most damaging earthquake on the island in over 100 years; no additional deaths or injuries have been reported.
A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Puerto Rico early Tuesday morning, January 7, prompting Gov. Wanda Vázquez Garced to declare a state of emergency. A 5.8 magnitude quake had struck just the day before, and several other tremors had been felt since late December.
Tuesday’s quake, believed to be the most damaging one to the island since 1918, resulted in at least one death, several injuries, and significant structural damage, particularly on the south end of the Island.
The people of Puerto Rico have suffered greatly and need our prayers. Many are still rebuilding from the devastating destruction of Hurricane Maria in September 2017.
Regarding Tuesday’s quake, C&MA Puerto Rico District Superintendent Javier Gomez writes,
“Power is gone all across the island. Some people have water, others don’t. Cell phones are working. Up to this moment haven’t heard of casualties but there is a lot of anxiety in the air. We’ve been shaking for several weeks now, but last 24 hours there’s been a peak in the situation. Never before in recent history. Trying to find out more about our people. Prayers are appreciated!”
