Since early March, media focus in West Africa has turned from terrorist attacks to COVID-19. Radio and television commercials have encouraged people to wash their hands frequently, not to touch their faces, and not to shake hands—an especially difficult order in this friendly African context.
By mid-March schools were closed, including our Alliance Bible institute. Public transportation, borders, and airports have also been closed and restrictions placed on public meetings, including houses of worship. In addition, authorities are closing open-air markets where Africans like to shop, as well as most stores. Everyone has been encouraged to shelter at home for at least two weeks.
What We’re Doing to Help
My wife, Esther, has partnered with teammates and her tailor to make more than 3,000 face masks. The team has distributed 500 of them at the local prison where they regularly minister.
We are also providing food and soap to widows, who, along with inmates, are some of the most destitute in our community. Because schools are closed and online education is not yet a viable option here, Esther is teaching middle-school English on our Alliance Christian radio station. It is one of 20 such stations here with the potential to reach more than 2.5 million people, the majority of whom do not know Jesus.
Please pray that the food, soap, and face mask distributions will be a witness and a blessing. “May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands” (Psalm 90:17).
