Although COVID-19 has been slow in coming to our country, the economy is already suffering greatly with closed borders, since tens of thousands of people here must regularly migrate to find work. A third of our economy comes from these workers who send back remittances.
People here are really starting to struggle to make ends meet. A local phrase that expresses what we are experiencing translates “heavy conditions.”
Many families are looking for hope under the weight of these heavy conditions, and we are here to share what we have. We recently distributed a one-month’s supply of food and soap to 100 families in our network. In this effort we partnered with three local fellowships that typically do not work together. And we prayed over many of these families in the name of Jesus.
One woman, Alma*, was especially impacted by our distribution. She became a believer two years ago but had never asked God for help because of old beliefs from her previous religion that He is distant and impersonal. While she was at work last week, Alma’s husband, also a believer, called and encouraged her to read Matthew 6:25–26. She found a Bible, read the passage, and for the first time prayed that God would provide for their needs.
By God’s design, one of our team members delivered food to Alma’s house that day. When she returned that evening, she was shocked to see how quickly the Lord had answered her request! This has become a milestone in Alma’s faith journey.
Pray with us that the families who received the supplies we distributed will be transformed as they experience firsthand the generosity of Christ. Pray for this nation and region, specifically that God will preserve lives as both the virus and poverty spread in the months to come.
