Steve and Mary Westergren

Prayer Letter/Ministry Update

August 2012

Dear Praying Friends,

Twenty-six years ago at this time we were waiting on our visa to move to Thailand for the first time as a couple. From that time until recently, life has stayed busy as we learned two languages, engaged in fulfilling ministry, and added four children to our family. We are indeed grateful that God has allowed us to slow down a bit in these last two years. We have had time to reflect on the first twenty-five years of cross-cultural work, listen to what God is saying, ask what transforming work He wants to do in us in this season, and prepare for the next chapter of life and ministry.

All this begs the questions: So when are you returning overseas? What will you be doing?

We want to assure you that we are moving in tandem with the Alliance in all of this. With our IM leaders’ permission, Mary is completing her M.A. in Clinical Psych this coming May 2013, and we will be returning to S.E. Asia next summer (2103) to begin working under the job description “Member care for the Asia Region,” which involves helping to care for our cross-cultural workers so that they can live and work in healthy and effective ways.

So for the year ahead:
*Mary will complete her clinical psychology degree at Wheaton Graduate School and an internship at Evangelical Child and Family Agency in Wheaton as a therapist-in-training.

*Steve will be auditing more courses in counseling and spiritual formation...participating in mediation training...and looking to God to guide ministry opportunities both on the local level and with International Ministries of the C&MA.

What’s up with us personally?
*Eric (23) and Sarah just moved to Des Moines, IA. Eric begins his studies at Des Moines University in osteopathic medicine Aug. 7th, and Sarah happily started working in a mother-child health care position.

*Kirsten (22) graduated from Wheaton College this past May. She’s working for the college this summer and looking for employment in her hoped-for career path of Urban Planning and Development.

*Brent (17) just returned from a trip to Ukraine. Despite a set back with an emergency appendectomy on the very day his team left for Ukraine, he was grateful to join up with the group six days later. How thankful we were that he wasn’t in the air when the pain started. Brent will begin his senior year of high school this fall.

*Kreg (15), entering 10th grade, was blessed to receive an amazing scholarship to attend Honey Rock Camp (part of Wheaton College) in the northern woods of Wisconsin for the entire month of July. He spent 8 of those days on a wilderness canoe trip traveling up to Lake Superior, including a 9 hour “solo” time as he learned to fellowship with God completely on his own.

*Steve is currently in Cambodia working with the Fount of Wisdom staff. His days have been full and productive, as he throughly enjoys working alongside the dedicated and talented FOW staff.

*Mary had 8 credit hours of class work this summer and is now just enjoying a bit of down, reading things other than theology and psychology, and spending time with family and friends.

Prayer Requests/Answers to Prayer

Join us in asking God to guide our steps, that we would stay in step with Him.

Join us in asking God how Steve’s new job description might move in the flow of all that he has done in the past. He thoroughly enjoyed his years with Fount of Wisdom, learning so much as he led this work. How will that contribute in the future?

Join us in asking God to enable Mary as she starts seeing clients after Labor Day.

Join us in praying for God’s provision for a just-right job for Kirsten, and for her to listen well as God guides in all the decisions before her.

Join us in praying for the three boys as they start a new year of school: medical studies for Eric and high school for Brent and Kreg.
